From Brian McGuiness
The McGuiness side of my family came to the US in 1900
from Leitrim,
Ireland. My grandfather, about 24 at the time,
settled in NYC and
became a typical "Irish" beat cop. He
was born on the Drumoula Townland outside of
Mohill. Being one of the last in the line of
a prolific family, his
only recourse was to emigrate. He married and
had six children. He
retired in 1936 and died in 1946. He is buried
in NYC.
My grandfather, Patrick Joseph McGuiness, has descendants
today in NYC,
Florida, CA and WA.
My great grandfather Dan McGuiness of the Cankeel
Townland, Leitrim, had
his name spelled Magennis, McGuiness, McGuinness and
McGuinfes in his
lifetime. He died in Ireland in 1913 but his
burial plot is unknown as
no headstone exists. I have traveled to Ireland
on two occasions. Both
times to visit sites and relatives in the Leitrim
area, and one of those
times to tour with the now defunct Magennis Clan Society
of Banbridge,
County Down.
