This is a eulogy written by his son at the time of his death:
My father, the Rev. E. Sweat, was born in Bladen County, N.
C., August 6, 1798,
and was brought up in that and Robertson county. He was
left an orphan at ten
years old, but through the kindness of friends was cared for
and obtained a
small share of education. His mother being a Christian
lady, on her death-bed,
when he was ten years old, exhorted him to meet her in
heaven, which he has
always said in his Christian experience was the loudest
preaching he ever
heard; but he did not seek religion till about twenty years
old, he having moved
to Marlboro District, S.C., where he had been happily
married to Miss Sarah
Perry, and became settled in life. He then began to
seriously reflect upon his
future and the admonitions of a dying mother, and to seek
the salvation of his
soul. After working himself out of work, as he often
expressed himself, just
between hope and despair, God for Christ's sake pardoned his
sins while alone
in the forest, and he joined the Methodist Church, and
remained in Marlboro till
1825, at which time he migrated to the frontier settlements
of Middle Georgia.
He stopped in Pike county among a few white settlers and
Creek Indians, and in
the organization of a Methodist Church was appointed class
leader, and in a
short time was licensed to exhort, and after remaining seven
years in Pikecounty, he removed to Fayette county, and aided in
establishing Churches in
those ends of the earth. About 1840 he was licensed to
preach, and in 1849
was ordained deacon by Bishop Andrew, and about 1862 was
ordained elder at
Griffin, Ga. My father has been a member of the Methodist
Church about sixty
years, and has served the Church in all of her lower offices
to acceptability. As
a minister, sympathetic and energetic, very searching and
pointed in his
discourses; as a Christian, he was zealous and exemplary,
exhibiting a
character worthy the name he had espoused; as a neighbor
generous and
benevolent. Thus he lived to do good and to get good till
the day of his death
which was June 18, 1879 at his home three miles east of
Fayetteville, Ga.,
where he bade adieu to earth amidst a large concourse of
weeping relatives and
friends, with a smile on his countenance, and with his last
words saying, "All is
well."
