JELLY BEAN LESSON PLAN
MATH
1. Using some of the 64 jelly bean stickers they sent us with
the VPW Video, I created math papers for the kids. The younger 2 I put addition and
subtraction on the stickers and the oldest I'm using multiplication and division. Creating
worksheets with the stickers makes it a bit more 'fun'. If you don't have stickers you can
draw large jelly beans on a sheet and place math problems inside the jelly beans.
2. We used the jelly beans to create a "Jelly Belly Line" on the table. The kids
measured the line and then, as we each pulled a certain number of jelly beans out of the
line to eat we had to measure it again.
Do YOU know how many jelly beans it takes, end to end, to create a yard of jelly beans?
3. We played "Don't Spill The Beans" using our jelly beans. We already have the
Milton Bradley (I think that's who produces it?) Game, instead of using the dried pinto
beans to play, we used our Jelly Belly Beans. What did this do as far as school? Well,
along with motor skills and just plain fun, we tried to figure out if certain jelly beans
seemed to weigh more than others. One of the kids noticed that the watermelon ones really
seemed to weigh more when plopped upon the bean pot as opposed to the others so of course,
we used that in our strategy of WHEN to place the "heavier" beans on the pot!
SCIENCE
1. Have the kids draw a tongue on a plain sheet of paper.
Now comes the fun part! Each child should have 3-4 cotton swabs.
On a paper plate place a small pile of salt, a small pile of sugar. Using the caps from
the bottles, pour a bit of lemon juice in one cap and a bit of vinegar in another. These
items are your flavors for your taste bud testing! Wet each swab with water so the salt
and sugar stick to it. The other 2 swabs do not need to be wet with water as you will dip
these in the lemon juice and the vinegar.
Now, each child closes their eyes as the teacher places different flavors on different
parts of the tongue.
What do you find?
The FRONT of the tongue has the SWEET taste buds.
The FRONT SIDES have the SALTY taste buds.
The SIDE BACK has the SOUR taste buds.
The MIDDLE has NO TASTE.
The FAR BACK has the BITTER taste buds.
This was a lot of fun and caused many giggles and chuckles as we discovered sometimes we
have NO idea what is going in our mouth until the right taste buds get the flavor!!
Now each child draws a MAP on their paper tongues, writing the words Sweet, Salty, Sour,
Bitter and No Taste in the correct areas of the tongue.
ENGLISH and LITERATURE
1. Print out our JELLY
BEAN JUMBLE page for some fun for English!
