I guess the first thing I need to do is tell you who I am. My name is Biscuit, and I am a black-tailed prairie dog. Your proabably wondering how I can type and tell you about myself, well my mom is translating for me.
I came to live here in North Carolina, with my family, in June of 1997. This is how I came to live with Les, Doris, Melissa, and Hunter. My mom, Melissa, and Hunter had seen me at the pet store one day when they had gone to buy food for Nikki (hedgehog), Dude & Dudette (parakeets), Sly (geeko lizard), and our 4 turtles. They were telling my dad, Les, about how cute I was. They talked about prairie dogs for a few weeks. Then one day my older brother, Eric who has moved out , because he's 26 now, called and said his car had broke down. So Les went to help him with the car. Les was gone about an hour but everyone at home wasn't concerned because they thought they were working on Eric's car.
Well, Les comes home and walks in the door and says guess what I have? Hunter right away hollers " I know what it is! You bought a prairie dog!!!" Guess what he was right! That was my first meeting with my new family. I still don't know how Hunter guessed it was me. You see Hunter is 9 yrs old and Melissa is 15 yrs old.
Now began the task of fixing me a home to live in. My mom gets on that thing that she bangs around on, I have learned now that it is called a computer. See I'm learning. She logs onto the internet and starts searching for pages on prairie dogs, trying to find out what I need. She found several pages about me, later on I'll give you those links. Well, me dad is handy around the house, he can build anything. So he said he would build me a house out of wire, because you see I like to chew alot. My mom went to a building supply store to buy what he needs. He started on it as soon as she got home. My dad has this one little problem, when he makes something it always seem to be bigger than he thought. My mom was looking at what he was building thinking that it would never fit in the house. Anyhow, she and Melissa had to go the store to pick up some more hinges, while they were gone they decided what dad was building was way to big!! So they decided to go to the pet store and see about a house. By the time they got there the store had just closed about 10 minutes ago, but the people were still there. They opened up to mom and Melissa. They bought me this really cool house. It's made of metal and sits in a plastic tray, it has 3 levels for me to play. I have plenty of room and I'm safe as a bed bug.
My house is next to Nikki's, she's a hedgehog, she sure sleeps alot in the daytime. I stay in my house, my mom doesn't want me to roam freely in the house, she's afraid I'll get hurt. Don't think I stay cooped up in my house all the time!! But, when I come out to play and romp in the house, they put a leash on me. I don't really like it, but I'm getting use to it. That way they can keep me out of harms way. Sometimes I come out without my leash and sit in their laps. I love to have my belly scratched, and be petted. When I want attention I climb up to my second level, stand up and kinda poke my nose out until someone pets me. I'm in the part of the house where all the action is, so I can see everything that goes on. I can see mom typing this page right now. Can't you see me?
Also whenever mom coughs I'll let out a little yip. Everyone thinks that is so funny. Now that mom thinks I'm safe on my leash she has started taking me outside to romp. In the evenings dad, Hunter and Melissa go to a park to walk for exercise. Hunter is playing football, and he needs to watch his weight, so he walks in the evening. They have started taking me with them now. BOY, do I have fun when we go. The first time I went I was so excited. The people that saw me didn't know what I was, some guessed squirrell, rabbit, or a rat. IMAGINE!!! There was a group of guys playing ball on the ballfield, the pitcher said "Hold the game I gotta see this prairie dog." The whole team came over to visit me. See, I'm a celebrity now!!! I look forward to our evening walks, it's so much fun hearing what people think I am.
Please keep checking back my mom promises to keep adding to my page. Gotta go now, I'm tired after all this yipping telling mom what to type. WHEW
