ORIETA
For years now, Eclectus have had a bad reputation. It's not true what you have read in the past. Eclectus are intelligent, loving, comical, mischievious and gentle birds. They are also great talkers, some say they can match an African Grey.
The females are a beautiful red and purple. The males are emerald green with candy corn colored beaks. They can live to be 40-50 years old.

Orieta doesn't like to be cuddled or petted like some parrots. I do hold her against my chest and give her hugs and rub my hand down her back. I'm not sure if she really likes it or is just putting up with it because she loves to be with me. Lately she has been letting me scratch under her wings.
Orieta loves to be where the action is. She does not want to be on her cage if we are in a different room. She will fly off her cage and come looking for us. And she loves it when we have company. She laughs when we laugh, and talks away until she is the center of attention. Which is her favorite thing.
She doesn't scream like the other parrots, but does have a squawk that she does in the mornings and when she is getting tired in the evenings. It never lasts long. Just a few minutes. In the evenings, she seems to talk herself to sleep. She will sit on her perch with her eyes half closed and quietly say just about everything she knows. Soon she is fast asleep. If we keep her up to late, she lets us know by saying "nite, nite" over and over, until we get the hint.
Eclectus are pigs with feathers. They love to eat! Don't know where they put all the food they eat.. I give her a large variety of foods and will eats it all!!
Orieta also loves to bath. She enjoys being sprayed with the mist bottle and really loves to take a shower with me. She goes crazy in the shower, flapping her wings and sticking her head under the water. So cute!!
And she loves to play..and play..and play.
She talks to the dogs when they come up to her cage. She tells them Good Morning, What are you doing?, Hey ,and anything else she thinks of. Oreita also will preen/chew on a dogs ear, they just stand there and let her do it. If the dogs get closer she tries to get on their back. She is a fun, playful bird and not afraid of anything. And a trouble maker. Always looking for something to get into. Got to keep my eye on her every minute she is out of her cage.
She likes me to lift her up and down with the stick. Of course, all the time she is saying "wheee".
This is one of the games she likes to play. My finger is at the end of the stick and I spin her around like a clock. She joins in and says "wheee". I spin her around one way, then unwind her. She loves it.
Would you like to hear her say a few words?
