RIDGWAY, William Henry
Timeframe:
1855-1935Location(s):
Philadelphia, PA, Chicago, IL, Detroit, MIQuery information:
Searching for birth, parentage of William Henry RIDGWAY. On May 25, 1904 he gave his age as 48 and his birthplace as Philadelphia, PA on the birth certificate of his youngest son, Richard Shreve RIDGWAY in Chicago, Il. This would have placed his birth in 1855-56. He apparently went by the name "Henry RIDGWAY" in later life.Married Harriet (Hattie) Lyndon in Detroit, MI sometime prior to 1895, when his oldest son, Roland Lyndon was born. We have reason to believe that Harriet was Roman Catholic, but we are not sure of William's religious affiliations. He was apparently educated as an accountant and served as treasurer or comptroller for a Michigan Piano manufacturing firm prior to the panic of '95.
He was the owner of a copy of a book on the immigrant Richard RIDGWAY's family which he used to make some notes indicating that he was of this lineage, but we have been so far unable to tie him specifically to one of the main Philadelphia lines. Despite a recent three-day visit to both the Philadelphia Historical Society and the records of the Library Company from the old RIDGWAY library. As you know, the birth records prior to 1860 are quite spotty. Any help you can give us will be greatly appreciated.

RIDGWAY, James Allen
Location(s):
Belmont, OhioTimeframe:
b. 1861/1880Query:
I'm looking for the father of James Allen RIDGWAY, b 1861 in Barnesville, Belmont, Ohio and John Cashes RIDGWAY, b 1867 in Boston (now Atlas), Belmont, Ohio.A clue was found on James' 2nd marr rec (1887) stating that his father's name was "William". I don't know how much stock I can take in this clue because James didn't always tell the truth ie: he also said he was divorced when, in fact, he was only separated (div final 1890).
Since James was b 1861 and John was b 1867 I wonder if he was off fighting in the Civil War. Unfortunately there were hundreds of RIDGWAY's from Ohio listed as Civil War soldiers. Also there were a good many William RIDGWAY's as well. A possibility could be Pvt Wm. RIDGWAY, age 24, drafted in Wash. Co., Ohio in 63 Regt OH Inf Apr 24, 1865-May 15, 1865. The records are then silent concerning him.
James and John's mother was Mary Jane RIDGWAY. Her parents were Amos RIDGWAY and Esther (surname unknown). Did Mary Jane marry a close relative as so often happened in those days? Or did she have two illigitmate children which did not happen quite so often then? The 1870 census shows her and the two boys living with her mother and her step-father, Jacob FINLEY.
Mary Jane RIDGWAY md Fluallen CARTER in 1871. The marriage record does not mention if Mary Jane is widowed, divorced or single. One of Mary Jane's grand daughter's told me that Mary Jane would never talk about her first husband. Was it because she wasn't married or did he run off? If the apple (James) doesn't fall far from the tree (William) perhaps he was a scoundrel.
Did William die between 1866 and 1870? Is he buried in an unmarked grave?

I am missing the connection between Josiah and my Lott Ridgway. There were numerous Lott Ridgway's, I believe they were all named after the maiden name of Sarah.
I have a picture of the homestead near Sinclair, WV. I also have pictures of the children of Allen Ridgway and Hovatter.
