Notes: (1) Thomas was about 32 years old when he enlisted into the CSA Army at
Brandon, MS for 3 years or the duration of the war. He was enlisted by
Capt. J. C. Moyers into the 39th Regiment of Mississippi Infantry as a
private in Company B. He was captured near Nashville on Dec. 15, 1864,
and later released on June 19, 1865 from Camp Douglas, IL.
(2) Thomas joined Mt. Gillead Missionary Baptist Church, a few miles south
of his home in July of 1873. In May of 1877 he joined by letter New Salem
Baptist Church (organized 1870). His wife Maggie and daughter Josie joined
the same day by profession. The Rev. John A. Wheelock was pastor.
(3) Dates of death and places of burial for Thomas and his first wife are
unknown. They may have been buried in Massey Cemtery on county road 236.
A survey of the cemetery in 1996 showed about 25 unmarked graves. A road
has been built through it and many markers distroyed. After her husband's
death, Maggie took her step daughter Josie and her children to Arkansas.
