PUBLICITY
|
Publicity is important for the scouting program as an avenue to attract new members and as a means of insuring an audience at your events or fund raisers. The local press is probably the most effect way to gain publicity to the general public.
Other means include radio spots or TV. Troop 701 when they lost their troop trailer, which contained all of their equipment, turned to KRON. They found an immediate response and a wealth of assistance coming from outside of our geographic area.
The internet is also a means of publicizing your events. Information can be placed on a website for your unit or submitted to the district website to be posted on the “Refrigerator” . This will get the word out to other scouters within our district.
The local press gets your message out to the local community. For example, I submitted a press release via email to all of the city papers in our area and to the regional paper The Daily Review for my son’s Eagle Ceremony. The Castro Valley Forum assigned a reporter to come to our home to interview my son and take his picture. The following article appeared on the front page of their paper:

The same article submitted to the San Leandro Times on paper along with a electronic picture yielded nothing. This paper appears to favor sporting events within it’s community.
The same article submitted to the Daily Review via email yielded the following article:

If something significant occurs at your event do not forget to do a follow up article. At my sons eagle ceremony the first eagle scout from our troop [whose father was a significant figure in the community] attended the ceremony. The following article and black & white electronic picture was submitted to the Castro Valley Forum and was printed with only minor editing on the front page of the paper.

Remember publicity is recruitment tool both for an audience and for boys to come into the program. Use it frequently.
