WOODMON BAPTIST CHURCH

CHURCH HISTORY

Ordained on March 14, 1998 -- Grenada, Mississippi

in fellowship with other churches of the American Baptist Association

On February 5th, 1984, Eastgate Baptist Church of Greenwood, MS. Voted to sponsor a mission in Grenada, MS. with Brother Jerry Baker as the Missionary-Pastor. On April 8th, 1984, the Grenada Baptist Mission held the first service in the living-room of the Baker's home at 240 Jones Rd. in Grenada. In July, 1984, the mission rented a store building in the Grady Green Shopping Center on Monroe Street. A piano was purchased and the mission began having worship services in the store building.

On February 27th, 1985, the mission voted to buy 3 acres of land at the intersection of Monroe Street and Wooded Drive. The process of clearing the land and building a church plant was begun shortly thereafter. In August, 1987, the mission moved from the store building and began having services in the basement of this building.

The name of the mission was changed to Fellowship Baptist Mission. The reason for the change was that there is a Grenada Baptist Association that had once had our post office box number as their address and this caused great confusion with our mail service.

In June, 1988, Brother Baker resigned as Missionary-Pastor and moved to another field of labor in Florida. With Eastgate's approval, the mission called Brother Ron Wilson as Missionary-Pastor in September, 1988. Brother Wilson accepted the call, and moved on the field in October, 1988.

After a few months of very much confusion with our mail service and people thinking that we were another group here in Grenada with the name 'Fellowship' as part of their name, the mission members voted to once again change their name. The name 'Woodmon' was derived from the names of Wooded Drive and Monroe Street

With the help of the Lord and much help from our sponsoring church, and the faithful support of our sister churches and other individuals, the upper floor was completed and ready for use in July, 1990. On July 13th, 1990, the members and guests met outside on the new parking lot and after the reading of God's Word and a prayer of thanksgiving, we walked inside this sanctuary praising God for all His goodness and all that he has done in this place.

In the spring of 1992, Brother Wilson moved to another field of labor and in June of 1992, Brother Dan Holt moved on the field as Missionary-Pastor. Brother Holt had been approved as an Interstate Missionary on salary. There was an indebtedness of approximately $80,000 on the building when Brother Dan came. With God's help that has been paid in full.

We rejoice in the Lord and praise God from whom all blessings flow.
