animal abandonment

A problem faced by the Singapore SPCA is animal abandonment.  This is a major cause of a large number of strays.  Where do these strays come from?  Most of them are the result of pet owners' irresponsibility.  Many pet owners spend a few hundred dollars to get a pet, mainly to please a child, or out of a whim of fancy.  These owners do not consider the responsibilities beforehand.  After getting the pet, they do not bother to take good care of it, they do not spend time training and playing with it, they do not groom it, they do not take it to the veterinarian for check-ups and sterilisation... ...the list goes on and on.

A few months later, the pet outgrows its novelty.  The once-cute puppy has become a nuisance that damages the furniture, chews the owner's favorite pair of shoes, and wets the thousand-dollar carpet.  The owner gets irritated and decides he has no time and money to waste on that troublesome creature.  Therefore, he decides to get rid of the animal, just as if it is a disposable plaything.  The owner abandons the poor animal, leaving it to live in the cold, dark streets.  Why did the owner buy the pet in the first place?  Whose fault is it?  The owner, of course.

These abandoned animals often get knocked down by cars, starve, contract diseases, get abused, and suffer a slow and painful death.  They also reproduce rapidly, increasing the population of unwanted strays.  This means more animals will suffer.  So the next time you want to have a pet, consider whether or not you will give it a really good home before buying it.  Please also note that animals are living things, just like humans.  Treat animals well.  They have feelings too.
