Terry's 3M's
a) take the 195 million over 20 years? or b) take the 104 million cash payment now? 2) Why? 3) How would you spend the money from the option you chose? This seems like a simple enough question to answer. However, this is something that I had spent a lot of time thinking about...only it usually isn't about the lottery or even that much money. Usually the fantasy involves winning the state-wide nickel slots mega-jackpot. I only play a couple a bucks at a time once or twice a year, so the chances of winning are slim--but, it's there. But, in answer to the first question, I would take the cash payment now. Who knows what will happen in the next 20 years? I'd rather take the money now. After all, I'm a Christian who believes in the Rapture. Who knows if I'll be here in 20 years? Another reason for taking the money now is that I live in a state that doesn't have an income tax. I would be moving to a state with an income tax. I could save a lot of money by taking the cash now. The short answer for how I'd spend the money is on this page. I will have a longer explanation at another time. Right now, I'm just too busy with kids and other things. The first thing that I would do is pay the taxes on the money so that I wouldn't have to worry about it. Then I'd take care of my mom by paying off her mortgage, debts, and buying a new car for her. I would help out other members of my family. Then, I'd be using the internet for finding realtor's in Maine and take my son with me to search for properties. (He wants to live where there is snow in the winter--and I've been in love with Maine for years.) After moving to Maine, I'd furnish the new house and scout around for a location to have my dream business.
Of course, there will be gifts to charities and tithing.
