Joining

Any girl or young woman aged 14-25, whatever her race or religion may joing Rangers as long as they are prepared to think about making the Guide Promise. Many girls join Rangers having been Guides, but some have no previous involvement with the movement at all.

The Guide Promise is:

I Promise that I will do my best
To Love my God
To serve the Queen and my country
To help other people and to keep the Guide Law.

As a Ranger you also Promise

To be of Service to the Community.

Programme

Rangers is basically FUN!!

The programme allows for you to do almost anything. If you enjoy out of doors adventurous activities such as canoeing or climbing that's fine, if you prefer football, that's fine too, or if you want to cook or sew, you can do that as well.

Usually the group sits down at the beginning of each term and plans what they want to do that term. Some of the group will always want to go to the cinema or bowling, but others want to do debate things or do some service in the community. There's space for everyone in the Ranger programme and doing a mixture of activities will usually lead to a well-rounded programme that's affordable too. A Ranger programme invariably has rather alot to do with food too.

When you first join Rangers the first few months will be taken up completing the Discovery Phase of the Look Wider Scheme. This has four parts to it:

Adventure
Wider World
Community
Creativity
And you need to do one activity from each part. Then you can continue on the rest of the Look Wider Scheme if you like.

There are Eight Octants in the Look Wider Scheme, that Rangers can work on if they want.
Out of Doors Leadership Sport and Fit for Life Personal Values
Independent Living International Service in the Community Creativity
More about the Look Wider Scheme can be found in the Section on
Awards & Qualifications

Awards & Qualifications

There are many Awards and Qualifications you can gain in Rangers. Some of them are listed below.
  1. Octant Certificates
To Gain an Octant Certificate you need to complete the Discovery Phase and Phases 1, 2 and 3 of a specified Octant. Phase 1 involves three activities from that Octant to give you a taster; Phase 2 is a little more advanced and you only need to carry out one activity; Phase 3 is more advanced still, and you need to carry out one activity usually ending up with a Qualification of some sort.
  2. The Chief Commissioner's Challenge
To complete the Chief Commissioner's Challenge you need to finish the Discovery Phase and Phases 1 and 2 in each octant.
  3. Staged Badges
Staged Badges exist in the Ranger Section in the same way they do in Brownies and Guides. If you have completed stage 2 of a Badge in Guides and wish to continue with Stage 3 in Rangers you may do so.
  4. Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme
This is split into 3 levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold. For each level you need to undertake an activity in 4 sections: Physical Recreation, Service, Expedition and Skill. For Gold you also need to do a Residential Project.
The split levels also mean split age groups; starting Bronze at 14, Silver at 15 and Gold at 16.
  5. The Queen's Guide Award
You need to be 16 to start the Queen's Guide Award, and have 3 years to complete it. It is the highest Award available in Guiding.
