Killing Rattlers
Fear and hatred of rattlesnakes is so widelyspread that the
usual reaction of many Floridians is to attempt to kill any
rattler that crosses their path. One man is known to have
emptied his revolver into a rattlesnake, reloaded, and
emptied his gun again. The snake kept moving and crawled
away into the bushes. Incidents such as this have created
the legend that a rattler will not die until the sun goes
down. Actually, it is difficult to kill any snake unless
the neurological tissue in its head is destroyed. The tail
of a snake may be severely injured, atrophied, or dried up,
and yet its front part may reman alive and functioning.
This why rolling over a rattler or any other snake with a
vehicle does not necessarily kill it. More enlightened
though now discourages the deliberate killing of any
snakes, includeding the venomous species, all of which have
their part in maintaing nature's balance.
