The Singing Postman

In memory of Allan Smethurst - who died 22 December 2000

In 1966, Postman Allan Smethurst from Sheringham released a single called "The Singing Postman - First delivery" This had on it amongst others, the famous "Hev yew gotta loight, boy?". Fame made him decide to leave the postal service and Norfolk, and went to live in Grimsby to persue a career in folk music. He disappeared from the music scene and there were some reports of his untimely death, but recently he has been in the news in Leicestershire trying to get royalties for a well known bedtime drink using his"Hev yew gotta loight, boy?" for their advert.

There are now 8 CDs of Singing Postman material

    The Big Green One!

A few years ago the BBC launched a conservation award called the Big Green One, which was awarded to conservation schemes around the country. The first individual to receive this award was Bob Engledow (From Norwich), who lived for many years in Cromer. His company ran a conservation group on the Norfolk Broads. The work is now carried out by his ex-wife Maggie in conjunction with the Broads Authority.
