Home Page Building |
For Webtvers |
The next steps are:
HTML~ You will need to learn a little basic knowledge of HTML
which stands for Hyper Text Markup Language, which is what all your commands will be written in. Once you have an idea of what html is and how it works you will be able to begin your Home Page building in earnest. As you read the tutorials don't worry about learning HOW to write it just concentrate on what it does and after you learn to copy and paste you will be able to just copy and paste the commands.
CUT, COPY AND PASTE~ Cut, copy and paste is in my opinion the best upgrade webtv has given us and it certainly makes Home Page Building a LOT easier. Cut is the ability to delete large areas of text (cut it out) and put it in your browsers memory. Copy means just that, to copy text, with webtv you can only copy text and not images. Paste means once you have copied or cut text from one site you can go to another area on that page or your Home Page and Paste (dump) it.
SOURCE VIEWER & VALIDATOR~ If you see something on a page and say to yourself (or everyone in the room), "WOW, how'd they do that?" You can take that page to a "SOURCE VIEWER" and it will lift the exterior page you "see" and show you all the html commands they used to make that happen so you can see how it was done. A "VALIDATOR" is merely a "SOURCE VIEWER" that shows and grades any code errors and checks the spelling of the page.
Puter People have your own means of doing most of these things within your Puter, this being one of them.
TRANSLOADER~ A transloader is simply a site webtvers can use to transfer html pages, images (gifs and jpgs), midis (music) files from a remote site to your Home Page files.
HEX~ HEX is a workpage in Anthony's Star Blvd Transloader that stands for "HTML Extractor" in case you have more than one image you want to transload off a page every time you have successfully transloaded one image there is a place to click on that returns you to the page you were working from saving you having to log in for every transload you want to make off a single page.
CAMLOADER SERVICE~ is another work page in Anthony's Star Blvd that enables Webtv Plus users to make video captures directly from your cam corder and transload them to their home page files.
EXTRA E-MAIL ADDRESS~ You may want to get an extra e-mail address in case someone sends you pictures to your webtv e-mail address. Some E-mail sites give us webtvers the ability to seperate pictures from our e-mail, by forwarding it to our other address, so we can transload them to our Home Page files.
PROMOTION~ After you have completed building your Home Page some of you may want to promote it to see how many hits
Banner Exchanges are where you make a banner for your page and join an exchange and all the members banners are rotated from member page to member page, like the banner you see below the GeoCities Guide above on this page.
You can submit your Home Page (site) to various Search Engines and if your Home Page is about Bicycle Racing and someone types "Bicycle Racing" in a Search Engine it will give them a list of sites that pertain to Bicycle Racing including
yours.
Web Rings are where a group that has something in common display a Ring Link at the bottom of all their pages with links to other member sites.
Newsgroups are basicly just like the bulletin board at the grocery store where the public is invited to post (pin a card) on the board to exchange information. On line, newsgroups take that place in our society. The only difference with the
grocery store example is newsgroups have a common subject theme to discuss. For example Country Music, Old Time Country Music, Recovery, Social Pen Pals, Computers and any other subject you can think of. I have my signature banner in my Signature Box and
everytime I post in a newsgroup everyone that reads my post has the opportunity to click on my banner and visit my home page if they'd like to know more about me.
This is a page containing a lot of the helpful links you will need to refer to often concerning building your home page such as the GeoCities File Manager Login and related links to pages. For now this will be the most valuable reference page you have so be
sure and assign it to one of your F Keys from the link below. When you want to access this tutorial just hit the F Key you have it assigned to and click on the links to these pages from there. Peruse it good as it will give you explainations of what all the different tools do.
At the top of the page is "Clear Cache." Sometime when you've been on line for a while and pages become slow loading that means you've amassed a lot of storage memory (pages you've visited). To clear a lot of them click on "InstaClear" at the top of the page. You will not be able to use your back button to revisit a page you have previously visited before you "Cleared Cache" and from that point on it will start saving visited sites all anew and
sometimes that helps pages load faster for you. However the best way to clear ALL the memory is to turn your power off and let the unit sit for a minute until it stops making noise.
There is a brief explanation of each catagory of links in the "Index" title its self and the links themselves have a brief explanation of what the site does in the status bar at the bottom the screen when you put the cursor over the name of the site (link)..
NOTE: WIRED KEYBOARDS don't have the ability to save favorite sites on the F-Keys like the wireless keyboards do. There is an adaptor for both the Classic and Plus Model Webtvs available for $36.95 that will enable you to use a wired keyboard and be able to assign sites to the F-Keys. Full details and ordering info can be found here.
Later in the tutorial I'll show you how to build your own F Key
Link Page with your personal favorite site links but for now you're welcome to use mine. By building one of these it will also allow you to link directly to these sites without saving them in your favorite folders thusly freeing up a lot of storage
space for other sites you'd like to store.
Of all the tutorials I've seen that would be the easiest and quickest for a newbie to learn would be to start right here with SIMPLE HTML written by the Bridge Troll himself. This one not only explains the basic codes you will be using, it provides an HTML Test Bed for you to practice them in. When you get through with this you will have a much better understanding of what the easy ones will be teaching you. Here is my own Pre HTML School, quick and easy tutorial. Just finish reading this page and it starts on the next page. Enjoy and have fun. :-)
You can find instructions on cut, copy and paste in the Webtv Help Center by going to your Main Webtv Home Page and clicking on "Using Webtv" then at the bottom of the page it takes you to in the search box type in "cut, copy and paste" and it will take you to the instruction page. However the links I'll give you here are much easier to understand and more detailed than Webtv's and even has places to practise as you read the instructions.
CLIPBOARD: Mad Rabbit has an excellent clipboard with five different pages on it I have assigned to an F Key. What makes that nice is if you're surfing looking say for food recipes and NASCAR sites to put on two different web pages on your site you can put them on seperate clipboard pages. When you put something on the clipboard you can go ahead and write all the codes on it there and just copy and paste it on your web page and not have to do a lot of straightening there. When you amass a few you can copy them off the clipboard and go to your web page you want to work on and dump them all at once instead of having to go through the process several times. You can get the Clipboard here Mad Rabbit's Clipboard.

When you click on the "Links & Tools Page" hit your "Save" key and save it in one of your Favorite Folders. After you have done that go to that Favorite Folder you just saved it in and on the Info Bar on the left click on "Organize" and when the next page comes up click on "Short Cuts." When the next page comes up click on the square beside this page and scroll down and click on "Done." That will take you to another page and there you will click on the number of the key you want to assign this page to then scroll down and click on "Done" again. That will asssign this page to one of your F Keys (on the top row of your keyboard F1-F7). This will enable you to have all this information at the push of one key and it saves a lot of storage space in your favorite folders.
