Scented Bath Salts

This makes a pretty and useful gift for almost any female on your Christmas list. Here's what you'll need.

  • Epson salts (the kind you buy at the grocery store)
  • assorted food colors
  • essential oils (scented oils)
  • your choice of containers (baby food jars work great!)
  • spoon for mixing
  • assorted ribbons, flowers, etc.
  • milk jug or margarine container
  • These are optional: hole punch, crayons or markers, eye dropper, & a small funnel to transfer the salts to your container.

    Instructions

    1. First you'll need a handy adult to help you out in the kitchen. The food coloring can get kinda messy so you might ask Dad for help if the gift is for Mom.
    2. Measure out enough Epsom bath salts to fill your container. Choose your favorite color and carefully stir it in the bath salts. The more color you pour in, the darker the color will be. Start off by adding just a small amount of color with the eye dropper. You can always add more! A clean milk jug cut down to bowl size works great and is disposable for larger sized batches. Try a empty, clean margarine container for smaller disposable bowls.
    3. Choose a fragrance oil for your salts. Start off adding just a drop or two. Some of these fragrances can be pretty potent! Mix thoroughly. These oils can be found in candle shops, usually anywhere potpourri is sold, and I've found some in Wal-Mart and even the local Dollar store in the candle section.
    4. Carefully pour the bathsalts into your container using the funnel and screw the lid into place. You are now ready to decorate your gift.
    5. Choose a pretty ribbon, small flower, (dried or silk) to wrap around the top of your container. You can even make your own gift tag by folding a small rectangular piece of paper in half to form a tag. Decorate your tag or just write a verse or note inside. Next, carefully take a hole punch and punch a hole through both of the layers of paper close to the fold line. Now you can loop your pretty ribbon through the hole and have a beautiful homemade tag. You can tie on the flower and knot the ribbon around it to hold it in place or you can glue it in place with a small dab of glue. Finish by tieing your ribbon into a bow. Now, wasn't that easy?
