Frozen fingers of swirling frost weave icy brocade patterns across my window.
Splinters of sunlight peek through the covered pane urging spectrum ballerinas to dance on the wall.
Glowing embers from last night's fire sparkle in the soft pile of still-warm ashes
And sleeping children snuggle deeper beneath the comfort of cozy thick blankets.
Outside in the quiet of the winter morning,
yesterday's footprints fill with falling flakes.
A squirrel tucks away the serendipitous treasure of a discovered acorn
And scurries up the yawning arms of a nearby oak.
Morning bird songs break the silence of the waking world
Urging sleepy eyes and dream-filled minds to rise in the early light.
The merry whistle of a tea-kettle sings
And the radio shares its blend of yesterday's music and today's news.
I settle back and watch the unwrapping of a new day....
And smile.
