A single flake of heaven's lace drifts down from a somber sky Eagerly joining hands with others as they dance in the chilling air. Together they fall gently into a soft drift of dazzling cold. Water running from nearby rooftops slows to a trickle And then stops altogether As glittering icicles lazily stretch their smooth crystal fingers to the quiet earth below. Gaily mittened hands grasp cottony spheres and toss them joyfully skyward. Forgotten sleds and rusty shovels come out of hiding And carrots long to become noses of soon-to-be built snowmen. Voices of children rise in laughter in merry calls to friends Who rush in booted splendor to push through rising hills of the white wonder. Traffic slows and bundled bodies rush inside to warm fires and cozy corners... Logs begin to blaze and cast shadows on frost-kissed windows And the sweet smell of warming chocolate and melting marshmallows waft across the night. The world is suddenly blanketed in quiet reverie...
Winter has begun...
