Italian Americans
celebrating our heritage and building a better tomorrow: Order
of the Sons of Italy in America. OSIA was established in the Little Italy neighborhood
of New York City on June 22, 1905, by
Vincenzo
Sellaro, M.D., and five other fellow immigrants from Italy who came to the United
States during the great Italian migration of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The
National Office in Washington, D.C. works to preserve and promote the cultural heritage of
Americans of Italian descent. If you are interested in Italian history, check out this
page, and what this Order is doing to keep the Italian heritage alive and well.
The National Organization of Italian American Women (NOIAW), founded in 1980, is the only national membership organization for women of Italian ancestry. NOIAW serves to promote ethnic pride through scholarships and programs dedicated to the concerns of women by forming a national and international network.
The International Organization of Students and Young Professionals
Celebrating Italian Culture, FIERI (meaning
"PROUD") was founded in the early part of 1984 more as a concept than as a formal organization. In fact, the original concept
was conceived very informally as two Italian-American College Club Presidents met to discuss the possibility of
organizing and sponsoring events together. Certainly there was a tremendous need to unite young Italian-American students and professionals beyond the confines of
a college campus and have a place to call their own.
Italy exists as an image in the heart, in the mind, in the artistry of a craft passed down through centuries.
