As our national economy has taken a dramatic downturn in recent months, many thousands more pets are being given up to shelters due to financial and other hardships on owners. Common now among reasons for pet relinquishment is, "cannot afford." Other cats and dogs wind up in shelters when their owners become ill, are forced to move or lose their jobs.
The increase in animal intakes in shelters places burdens on the shelters, who then turn to rescue groups for help.
As a small rescue group working with Animal Control in New York City, we are besieged with constant pleas to save these dogs or those cats.
Unfortunately, rescue groups are also feeling the economic pinch and volunteer downturns.
It has become much harder to find willing volunteers to temporarily foster animals until the pets can be permanently placed. It is much more difficult finding adoptive homes. And it has become far more challenging to raise the necessary monies to support vetting and other care of rescued animals.
The lack of available fosters means rescue groups are forced to board many rescued animals when financially possible. Unfortunately, boarding, particularly over long periods of time becomes financially prohibitive.
Currently, NYCA has 7 wonderful dogs in boarding. Not only is the boarding of animals financially draining, but it is not the best thing for the dogs. Long term cage confinement can cause high stress in many animals resulting in possible later behavioral and adjustment issues.
But, even more than the financial stresses on the organization or possible emotional damages on the animals, there is the very real fact, that once filled in foster homes and boarding spaces, the rescue organization can no longer rescue NEW animals.
When rescue organizations are filled to capacity and cannot take in new animals, that translates into more animals going into city pounds and ultimately dying. City shelters are currently forced to "euthanize" an ever increasing number of loving and healthy cats and dogs simply because homes and rescue cannot be found for them in time.
A rescue organization that cannot "move" its animals either into foster or adoptive homes, cannot continue rescue.
Animal Control shelters who cannot move their animals into adoptive homes or rescue organizations are forced to kill otherwise highly adoptable pets on a daily basis.
Both of the above scenarios are happening RIGHT NOW, every day in New York City.
Shelters and rescues desperately need HELP -- especially help in the forms of responsible adopters and willing volunteer FOSTERS.
Even if you have one pet already, PLEASE consider taking in another on a short term basis until a permanent home can be found for the cat or dog.
In many cases, volunteer fosters can even choose a particular animal to foster.
Challenging times call for those able and willing to step forth to lend a helping hand.
Please call us immediately, if you are able to foster or adopt a needy and loving cat or dog or even just seeking further information:
(212) 427-8273.
Thank You in advance,
New Yorkers for Companion Animals.

Davy is an extremely sweet and gentle 10-week-old kitten who loves playing with other kitties. Rescued from the city shelter where he had come in as a "feral kitten" with no mother and no siblings. Extremely scared at first, Davy has come around in only a few short weeks to trust people and enjoy sitting on a lap and being petted. A very sweet boy. Davy is already neutered and UTD on shots. If interested in Davy Crocket, please call us rather than email. (212) 427-8273.
Brandon is a handsome, two year-old, declawed Ocicat mix who came into the city shelter as a "stray." Brandon is extremely loving and affectionate and also OK around other animals. He loves lots of attention and lap sitting. Totally fabulous cat. If interested in Brandon, please call us, rather than email. (212) 427-8273.
Mario is a handsome, healthy and extremely gentle and sweet 2-year-old Long-haired Tuxedo cat rescued from the back of a building. Brother to our cat, "Johnny," though the two cats do not need to be adopted together. Mario is good around other cats and dogs. A little shy in new situations until he gets adjusted. Loves being petted. Beautiful and very appealing cat. If interested in Mario, please call us at (212) 427-8273. He needs a loving and attentive home.
Ronnie is an extremely loving, gentle, playful and affectionate 6-month-old tabby kitten. Good with other pets, including dogs. Healthy, neutered and up to date on shots. Ronnie was rescued as a tiny, unweaned kitten without a Mother from the city pound. Nurtured and loved in his foster home, Ronnie is now ready for his permanent "forever" adoptive home. Please have another cat or be willing to adopt Ronnie with one of our other great kittens/cats. If intested in Ronnie or learning more about him, please call us at (212) 427-8273. Ronnie is a total LOVER!
Treasure is a young (11-months-old) Tuxedo kitten rescued from the city pound. Treasure is very gentle, great around other pets and sweet. Although a little shy with new people and new situations, Treasure is as his name implies: A treasure. Treasure is neutered, very healthy and generally, a quiet well behaved cat. Should go into a home with at least one other kitty. If interested in Treasure, please call us at (212) 427-8273. He is a sweetie.
Gimpy is an extremely loving, gentle and affectionate 4-month-old Ocicat mixed kitten. Good with other pets, including dogs. Healthy, spayed and up to date on shots. Gimpy was rescued from the city pound where she was on the Euth list for being scared. She is still a little shy when first going into new situations, but she is a loving purr ball. Adorable cat! We are seeking a loving, responsible and cat experienced home for Gimpy. She will either need to be adopted with another kitty or go into a home with a young cat already in the home. If interested in adorable Gimpy, please call us (212) 427-8273. She is a sweetie!
Gabby is a two-year-old, Abyssinian mix cat who came into the city shelter as a stray and ended up on the Euthanasia list. We pulled Gabby and though very noisy and a little high strung when first rescued, Gabby has settled in very nicely in his foster home. Gabby gets along with other animals and is social with people. He likes being petted and doesn't mind being picked up. He comes when called. An all around nice cat who is quite good looking and enjoys the good life. If interested in Gabby, please call us, rather than email (212) 427-8273. Gabby is going to make a very good companion for some lucky person!
Cream is a little cream puff of a kitty, thus the name. Cream is a 4-month-old, extremely affectionate and craving lots of human attention kitten whose favorite thing in life is being on her person's lap. Cream was rescued from the Euth list of the city shelter. There are simply too many cats and kittens being abandoned and not enough homes for them. Cream was one of the lucky ones to get saved. But, now she needs her permanent and forever home. Could that be you? Cream is already spayed and up to date on shots. Great with other pets. If interested in this little cream of the crop girl, please call us at (212) 427-8273. Cream is a-waitin!
Dolce is an extremely loving, gentle and affectionate 1-year-old Tortie kitty who came into the city shelter as a "stray" shortly after having kittens. Though passed for Adoptions, Dolce failed to be adopted in time and instead, ended up on the shelter Euthanasia list. We pulled Dolce and she is currently in a foster home waiting once again for adoption. Dolce is good with other pets, including dogs. However, she would be just as happy to be a "one and only" kitty. Healthy, neutered and up to date on shots. Wonderful kitty waiting for an equally wonderful home. Could that loving, responsible home be yours? If interested in lovely, gentle and loving, Dolce, please call us (not email!). (212) 427-8273. This highly adoptable cat has waited long enough for her special person(s).
Ruby is an extremely loving, gray and white, 7-year-old cat who was, for 6 years, the victim of her former owner's misfortune. Ruby's previous guardian was murdered. Ruby then spent the next 6 years living in the empty apartment of a building that was otherwise abandoned. The super of another building came everyday to feed Ruby and give her a little human attention. Although the man made many attempts to find Ruby a home, no one was willing to take the cat. Finally, the building was slated for demolition. The super, then desperate, approached us for help. Ruby has now been rescued, vetted, spayed and is currently in a temporary foster home. But, Ruby needs to find the loving, forever home she has waited so long for. Could that be you? Ruby, having been so deprived of human attention for so long, now thrives on it. She would make a wonderful companion cat for someone seeking an affectionate, one and only lap kitty. Please call us if interested in Ms. Ruby. (212) 427-8273. Its time for this little gal's luck to finally turn around!
Sunny(like his name implies) is a gregarious, playful, curious and extremely loving, gentle and affectionate 2-year-old kitty who was dumped at the city pound by owners who claimed to "have no time" for their cat. Sunny is good with other pets, including dogs. He is very healthy, neutered and up to date on shots. The best home for Sunny would be one where he might have another buddy cat to play with. Sunny is a wonderful and handsome kitty waiting for an equally wonderful home. Could that loving, responsible home be yours? If interested in Sunny, please call us at (212) 427-8273 and bring a little "sun" into your life!
Ellie is a 3 month old, black (Bombay type) kitten rescued from a woodpile in the backyard of a Brooklyn catering company. Rosie is a 2 month old, beautiful Calico rescued from the city shelter Euthanasia list. Even though both came from rough surroundings they are as sweet and lovable as can be. Both are like your shadow and love to be where you are purring on cue. They love to be petted and doted on. Both are extremely playful, have a lot of energy and get along great with other animals. They have all their shots and are spayed. Because of their high energy they will either need to be adopted together or go into a home with a young cat already in the home. If interested in adorable Ellie and Rosie, please call us (212) 427-8273. (NOT email!) They're so sweet!
Lou is a three-year-old, handsome red tabby cat who was cruelly abandoned in a cardboard box in the lobby of the animal pound the day after Christmas. Due to the shelter being very crowded, Lou ended up on the Euthanasia list as soon as his "stray hold" was up (three days). We rescued Lou and he is currently doing very well in a foster home where he is living with another cat. Lou is great with other cats and EXTREMELY LOVING and socialized with people. He is perfect with his litter box and loves sleeping and cuddling next to his person. Lou actually gives kisses! It is hard to understand how such a loving cat like this could be so callously abandoned. But, all that is behind Lou now. We seek a cat loving, committed home for Lou. He would make the perfect "buddy" and playmate for another cat in the home. If interested in sweet Lou, please call us, rather than email (212) 427-8273. He is one very purrfect kitty!
Tinkerbelle is a beautiful and extremely affectionate, 3-year-old, black Maine Coon mix kitty who lost her home when her former owners "moved." Tinkerbelle is spayed, healthy and good around other pets. SHE IS WONDERFUL WITH CHILDREN. Lovely, socialized and sweet kitty. Currently, Tinkerbelle is in a foster home with a number of other pets (including dogs) and two children. But, we would love for Tinkerbelle to find her own special adoptive and permanent home where she can happily enjoy the rest of her life. Can that be you? If interested in sweet Tinkerbelle, please call us at (212) 427-8273. She is a total LOVE!
Diva is an extremely loving, gentle, obedience trained, 5-year-old, 45lb, Rodesian Ridgeback mix who came into the city shelter after her former owner had a stroke. Diva walks well on the leash, is housebroken, very responsive to commands and is good around other pets. Despite being a lovely and well behaved dog, we don't have a place to immediately put Diva and are seeking a foster or adoptive home. As of 3-29-06, she is still at Animal Control (in adoptions). If interested in either fostering or adopting, Diva please call us at (212) 427-8273 as SOON as possible. You won't regret it. This is a GREAT dog!!!
Kia, because of her loving and gentle ways with people was a favorite of volunteers and staffers at the Animal Control shelter where she was left by a family, claiming the "wife doesn't want the dog around anymore" because the woman was pregnant again. Kia is easy to walk, housebroken, great with men, women and kids and loves to please. Very good in apartment and also good in cars. Extremely nice dog who needs a committed home. If interested in Kia, please call us at (212) 427-8273.
Jessie was living in a basement with an old man and three other (smaller) dogs. When a new landlord took over the building, he demanded that all the dogs be removed from the basement. Jessie and her canine companions all came into the city pound. While the little dogs went out to rescue, Jessie failed to get rescued or adopted and instead, ended up on the shelter Euth list. We have temporarily pulled her off, but she needs urgent foster or preferably, adoption. Jessie is a lovely, 2-year-old, Hound/Ridgeback/Staffie mix who is obviously good around other dogs, easy to walk, healthy, seemingly housebroken, gentle, quiet, affectionate and not very big (about 45 lbs). Though a little timid at first, Jessie responds well to gentle handling and a pat on the head. Can you help us save this LOVELY dog? If so, please CALL US at (212) 427-8273 as soon as possible. Jessie is going to make a really nice dog for some lucky person or family.
Chichi is a two-year-old, 43 lb delightful Chow mix rescued from the city shelter. Chichi was surrendered by a family claiming to "have no time" for their dog. Chichi is very intelligent, eagar to please and learn, totally housebroken, good in an apartment, good around other dogs and presently learning to be a nice boy around cats. Chichi loves playing with other dogs in the dog run and he enjoys lively walks. The best home for him would be one that could allow Chichi ample opportunity for exercise and play, while at the same time, devoting time to teaching Chichi all the things young dogs need to be happy, good dogs in a city or country environment. As said, Chichi is very smart and anxious to please. If interested in Chichi, please CALL us, rather than email. (212) 427-8273. Chichi is a wonderful dog and would make an adoring, loyal and companionable pet to almost any loving and committed home.
Charlotte was picked up by Animal Control in a Bronx parking lot right off the highway. She was brought into the city pound, where vets estimated, "Dog has been on streets a long time." Depressed, "lost" and appearing ill, Charlotte was designated for euthanasia as soon as the 3-day "stray wait" was over. -- obviously, no one was coming to retrieve this long abandoned dog. Fortunately for Charlotte however, a shelter volunteer noticed the forlorn dog, walked Charlotte and took a couple of pictures of her. In a 'Hail Mary" kind of pass, the volunteer emailed a touching notice out to several rescue groups who work with the shelter: "An older, very neglected Chow mix whose given up on life....hasn't known love in a long time, if ever." One of those rescue groups was us and we were the people to respond to Charlotte. She has, for now, been removed from the Euthanasia List, but we desperately need to find a loving and caring foster or adoptive home Charlotte. Aside from being grungy, scruffy and long neglected, Charlotte nevertheless is basically healthy and EXTREMELY RESPONSIVE TO LOVE AND TENDERNESS. She is a quiet, gentle dog who seems to like other animals. She walks nicely on the leash and is housebroken. Charlotte will, in fact be a BEAUTIFUL dog in every way with just a little care and compassion. Can you open your heart to a lovely canine, long down on "luck" and the milk of human kindness, but only to happy to respond? Charlotte is up to date on shots, healthy and simply seeks a kind heart and human hugs to nuzzle up to. If interested in Charlotte, please CALL US immediately (NOT email). (212) 427-8273. If might well be the best decision you have ever made!
Boomer is a 2 year old pit mix picked up as a stray by the AC&C. He is extremely QUIET and sweet. (The shelter worker we talked to said that he hasn't barked once since he's been there.) Rated a "No Concern" by the shelter, Boomer is completely MELLOW and aloof to his surroundings. He is content to sit quietly in his cage and wait for a kind glance or a volunteer to walk him. Boomer sure does love walks! After his walk, he quietly and compliantly saunters back into his cage, where he waits to be noticed. He seems to have never been given affection, and appears to be a bit timid at first. But he quickly warms up to you and gives lots of sweet little kisses. He may be intimidating to look at, but I can assure you, this mellow SWEETHEART of a dog would be a WONDERFUL and LOYAL companion to a very special person. Could it be you? Please call Patty ASAP if you are interested: (212) 427-8273. His time is running out! Thanks!
Adriene is a one-year-old, very healthy, devoted and affectionate Rhodesian Ridgeback mix who came into the city shelter as a "stray." Initially timid and frightened in the pound, Adriene has flowered into a totally delightful dog when finally rescued and going to one of our loving, experienced foster homes. Adriene is HOUSEBROKEN, GREAT WITH KIDS, CATS AND OTHER DOGS. She would be an ideal dog for an active family or home with other pets. Adriene likes to "retrieve" balls and lives to please her people. She is a vibrant, young beauty who simply seeks those who can appreciate and reciprocate her love. Could that be you? If interested in sweet Adriene, please CALL us (not email!) at (212) 427-8273. Adriene has many years of loyalty and love to give to the right people!
Nia is a 3-year-old, Shepherd/Stafffie mix who ended up at the city pound shortly after she had puppies. No one knows what happened to Nia's puppies, but we do know that Nia is a great Mom who loves not only canine kids, but human kids as well! Whatever home Nia originally came from, it must have been with children, because Nia totally lights up when children are around! Nia is a very gentle, sweet dog. She is housebroken, loyal, quiet, devoted, healthy and comes when she is called. She would be an ideal dog for a family or just someone who had a special place in their hearts for those "ordinary mutts" who are so often overlooked in city shelters. Nia was on the Euthanasia list when we pulled her for rescue. Now, she needs to find her forever home, where she can be loved and appreciated for the truly unique dog she is. Could that be you? If interested in loving Nia, please call us at (212) 427-8273. Nia is a special dog who will make some lucky person or family very happy.
Honey is a 2-year-old, (former Mama) Staffie Terrier wo is nothing but KISSES and LOVE (hence her name) to everyone she meets! Honey arrived at the city shelter as a "stray" and has quickly endeared herself to all shelter volunteers and staffers. She is adorable looking! Short, a bit squat and compact and only 36lbs! Honey walks well on the leash and minds her own business around other dogs. She has tons of enthusiasm and love of life and people. She would make a wonderful family dog. She would be a great companion for a reasonably active person who enjoys a morning or evening jog. Honey was in adoptions at the city shelter, but failed to get adopted in the very crowded pound in time. She is now on the EUTH list! We have temporarily pulled her off, but urgently need to find emergency foster or preferably, adoption. Can you help us save Honey? If so, PLEASE CALL US IMMEDIATELY (212) 427-8273. Honey has too much love and good cheer to offer to die so young. PLEASE, please help us save her!
Snoopy is an adorable Shih-Tzu who was rescued from the city shelter after being neglected in a former home. Suffering from bladder stones, Snoopy's former owners found it easier to abandon the little 7 to 9-year-old dog than take him to a vet for treatment. Snoopy has since been rescued, undergone surgery to remove the stones and is currently doing well in one of our foster homes. He is also now neutered and up to date on shots. Snoopy is a quietly affectionate little dog who appreciates having someone to himself. He likes to follow his person around and sleep near the one he loves. He would do best in a quiet, stable home without other dogs, small children or lots of comings and goings by visitors or roommates. Snoopy is a very good apartment dog. He is housebroken, non-destructive and is OK being left alone for a few hours. He is also OK around cats. Snoopy doesn't require tons of exercise and prefers lying by his person and watching TV. Currently, Snoopy is in a foster situation that is not well suited to his needs because of roommates and another dog in the home. He would be much happier and more secure in a home that he could really feel is his own. Could that home be yours? If interested in adorable Snoopy, please call us (NOT EMAIL!) at (212) 427-8283. Please have prior ownership experience with this type of dog and some record of having taken your dog to a vet. Snoopy has already suffered from prior neglect to his physical and medical needs and we would not want that to happen again. Snoopy deserves someone (or a mature couple) who can love and care for his needs. If that can be found for him, he will reward his new people with years of devoted, quiet affection. He is a little sweetie, but needs someone special to bring out his inate loving, happy nature.
Suzanna is a three-year-old, Beagle/Shepherd mix (62 lbs) who lost her home when her owner became homeless and had to enter a shelter. The former owner indicated that Suzanna is housebroken and LOVES MEN, WOMEN AND CHILDREN. Suzanna is extremely sweet and affectionate. She loves to give kisses! Suzanna is easy to walk, sits on command (with treats) and seems like she would make a WONDERFUL FAMILY DOG.. Very trusting and generally cheerful temperament. Suzanna is in good condition and healthy. Unfortunately, due to severe crowding in our city shelters, Suzanna failed to get immediately adopted and ended up on the Euthanasia (kill) list almost as soon as she came in. WE HAVE TEMPORARILY PULLED HER FROM THE DEATH LIST, BUT NEED IMMEDIATE FOSTER OR ADOPTIVE PLACEMENT! Can you help save Susanna? If so, you need to CALL us (212) 427-8273 (NOT EMAIL!) as soon as possible. Time is of the essence in trying to save a loving dog who could bring many years of joy to a loving family.
Macgyver is a wonderful (2 to 4-year-old) Golden Retriever/Chow mix who arrived in the city shelter as a "stray." Macgyver is a handsome and healthy dog who has a very loving, sweet temperament and did well on the behavior test. He is a calm and easygoing dog, housebroken and he weighs only 45 lbs. Macgyver loves other dogs and seems good around cats. He loves people and seems like he could be a good family dog. We are currently seeking a responsible adoptive home for Macgyver as soon as possible as he is highly adoptable and there are many other dogs who desperately need rescue. Our emergency fosters are very limited. If interested in Macgyver, please CALL US (Not email!) at (212) 427-8273. Due to his good looks and health, as well as outstanding personality, we will not have Macgyver long!
Brownie is an adorable, very healthy, affectionate and vivacious Tibetan Spaniel mix who was dumped at the city shelter by people who didn't even give a reason for abandoning their pet of 7 years. Brownie was very scared and distressed in the pound and landed on the Euthanasia list. Fortunately, one of the shelter workers pulled him off and made a special appeal to us for rescue. Brownie is now doing wonderfully in one of our primary foster homes. Brownie is the ultimate "lap dog." He loves to give kisses. He is totally housebroken, loves to go for walks, loves car rides and most of all, loves lots of loving attention. Brownie is very friendly, playful and outgoing towards other dogs, as well as he is good with cats. He could go into a home with older children. We are seeking a dog experienced home for Brownie. His adopters MUST have a history of committed dog care and a checkable vet referance. Brownie is 16lbs, up to date on shots and a total LOVE. If interested in Brownie, you MUST CALL us (NOT EMAIL) at (212) 427-8273. We will not have this little cutie long.
Maxi is a very young (between one and two-years-old) and vibrant Elkhound/Shepherd mix who arrived at the city shelter as a "stray." Although healthy, temperamentally sound and put into the Adoption ward of the shelter, Maxi failed to get adopted in time and wound up on the shelter Euthanasia list. We pulled Maxi, but she is currently sitting in a cage in a boarding facility. Maxi is a very loving and responsive dog who understands basic commands and is easy to train. She loves to please humans and seems to enjoy the company of other dogs. Maxi would make a wonderful family dog with older children. She would be a great dog for an active home. Shepherds like to have something to do, and we could see Maxi excelling in games of frisbee or agility work. She is a dog with enormous potential, but she will need adopters who are willing to work with her and see to it she gets enough exercise, discipline, love and stimulation. If interested in this 48 lb exuberant sweetheart, please call us.(212) 427-8273 (not email!). We would love to see Maxi in a loving foster or preferably, adoptive home for Christmas. Could that be you?
Rudy is a 6-year-old, 12 lb purebred Pekingese who was abandoned at the city pound by his owners just prior to Christmas. Former owners didn't bother to provide an explanation for dumping their pet in the shelter after 6 years, but did say that Rudy "loves men and women" and is trained and housebroken. Currently, Rudy is in a foster home and doing very well. He is an extremely loving, gentle and well behaved dog. He loves people and is lively and playful. He loves going for walks in the park. We are seeking an adult adoptive home for Rudy that has committed adult dog ownership experience and a checkable vet referance. Because we have no information regarding Rudy with other pets or children, we cannot answer questions regarding these potential situations. If interested in sweet and adorable Rudy, you MUST CALL us (not email!) at (212) 427-8273. Because Rudy is such a sweet and endearing little dog, we do not anticipate having him long!
Jewels is a mature (7-years-old) Kelpi mix who was abandoned at the city shelter shortly before Christmas by a woman who claimed Jewels was "too protective" of the family child when the parent wanted to discipline. Jewels has since been rescued and is currently in a foster home with children, cats and another dog. Jewels loves children and is good around other pets. She is easy to walk and enjoys exercise. She is housebroken and healthy. Jewels would make an ideal family dog or a good companion for someone seeking a loyal and easy to care for pet and/or one who is good around other animals. Jewels is comfortable in an apartment and a nice size for the city (Jewels is about 35 lbs.). Don't let Jewels' mature age fool you! She loves going for walks and is fully capable of going for a jog in the park, a hike or climbing up 5 flights of stairs. If interested in sweet Jewels, please call us at (212) 427-8273 (rather than email). Jewels just needs a family or person she can love and be devoted to and we hope to find that for her soon. Could that family or person be you?
Chiva is a very loving, devoted and seemingly well trained, 5-year-old, Lab/Staffie mix who was brought into the city shelter by someone claiming that Chiva's previous owner had recently died. Although Chiva received an excellent behavior evaluation at the shelter and was deemed healthy, she failed to get adopted in time and quickly ended up on the shelter kill list. (Black, medium size and mature dogs [and cats] generally have a harder time finding adoptive homes. "Racism" in animal adoptions seems to be alive and well.). We rescued Chiva and she is currently in a boarding facility. Chiva appears to be totally housebroken. She is very responsive to commands and eager to please. Chiva seems like she would be a wonderful family dog and she seems to be peaceful around other dogs. Though a very solid and muscular dog, Chiva is not big. She is only about 45 lbs and comparatively easy to walk. She is quiet and loving. We are currently seeking a loving foster or adoptive home for Chiva. If you would like to meet Chiva and consider bringing her into your home, please CALL us at (212) 427-8273 (NOT email!) You will not be disappointed!! She is just waiting to bring joy and love to some fortunate person or family.
Dutch is a one-year-old, healthy and stunning looking Dutch Shepherd (smooth)/Chow mix who was seized from a home when his owner was evicted. Dutch is a beautiful, medium sized (48lbs) dog who is good around other dogs and reasonably easy to walk. Unfortunately, there was no information provided on Dutch from former owners regarding children or cats and since we have had Dutch in boarding since being rescued from Animal Control, we can't answer such questions with any certainty. Dutch is a very young dog who will need exercise, a dog-experienced owner and presumably, some training. He has been in boarding for many weeks and is becoming stressed from the confinement and lack of stimulation. At this point, we are seeking either foster, trial adoption or adoption placement as soon as possible. Can you help Dutch by either providing foster or a permanent home? If so, please CALL us at (212) 427-8273 as soon as possible. It is urgent that we get Dutch out of the boarding situation he is currently in and has been for too long. Rescue is not enough if we don't have appropriate homes and situations to send the animals to.
Amanda is a smallish (only 37 lbs), 2-year-old Labrador/Whippet mix who was rescued from the city pound after she had arrived as a "stray." Amanda is extremely loving, gentle, housebroken and easy to handle. She loves other dogs and seems like she would be a great dog around kids. Amanda would make a wonderful family pet or she could be an enthusiastic running companion for a fairly active person in the city. Judging by her lithe body and long legs, Amanda could be a fantastic Frisbee dog. She is very pretty, extremely sweet and eager to please! Can you provide a loving home to this little sweetheart? If so, please call us (rather than email) as soon as possible (212) 427-8273. Amanda will be a wonderful and loving addition to any home she goes to.
Smokey is a beautiful and extremely gentle and sweet, mature Collie mix who was callously abandoned by his owners when they moved. Neighbors brought Smokey into the city pound where he quickly became a favorite of staffers and volunteers. Smokey is easy to walk, very balanced and affectionate and peaceful around other animals. He got all "A"s on his behavior tests. Although the seeming brother to "Lassie," Smokey nevertheless failed to get adopted at the shelter. Sadly, it seems his ragged, neglected condition (or maturity) appeared to turn perspective adopters off even though it is a simple thing to bathe a dog or bring him to a groomer. Smokey is in good health and already neutered, but his time is fast running out. We urgently need a reliable foster person or ideally, adopters for Smokey or he will soon face euthanasia (death) due to lack of a place to go. Please don't let this wonderful, loving, dog die due to the cruelty and neglect of his former owners! Surely there must be some kind person still left who is willing to offer a helping hand to a loving, sweet animal in need. Could that be you? If so, PLEASE CALL US AS SOON AS POSSIBLE (212) 427-8273. -- Smokey's "time" is down to the 11th hour!
Melanie is a lovely 6-year-old Golden Retriever/Chow mix who was dumped from her home of 5 years after the couple had a new baby. Very lost, depressed and missing her people, Melanie doesn't look her happiest in the pictures, but that can easily change if fortunate enough to find compassionate and committed adopter(s). According to former owners, Melanie is loving, devoted, totally housebroken and good in an apartment. She was not with other pets (although OK with dogs in neighborhood) so we don't know how Melanie would be living with other animals in a home. Melanie is healthy, already spayed and beautiful. She would be the ideal dog for a couple or person seeking a loyal, quiet and loving companion. No major issues! If interested in lovely Melanie, please call us (rather than email) at (212) 427-8273. Currently Melanie is in the city pound (kill shelter) and her "time" is soon to run out unless we can find suitable foster or (preferably) adopter(s). TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE!
Coco is a beautiful and gentle Collie/Samoyed/Chow mix who was brought in by cops to the city shelter after her owner died in an apartment. Although depressed and distraught after losing her person, Coco has made a brave transition and now seems to be longing for some kind human company. Coco is about 7-years-old, in seeming robust health, already spayed and easy to walk. Although not ready for "swim suit season" or marathon runs due to some extra pounds, we are quite sure that with some moderate and regular exercise, Coco will soon be fit for her "Dog Fancy" cover shot. Because we are presuming Coco lived with a solitary older person, we can't answer how quickly she would adjust to living in an active family with children or other pets. She would perhaps do better as an only pet living in a fairly quiet home as presumably that is Coco's "comfort zone." Again, these are all speculations based on the little information we have on beautiful Coco. Currently, Coco is being boarded in a Manhattan dog kennel. However, we would love to get her into a caring and responsible foster or adoptive home as soon as possible. If interested in lovely Coco, please CALL US (NOT email) at (212) 427-8273 as soon as possible. After losing her beloved owner after some years, Coco needs some extra TLC.
Leon is a large and extremely gentle, loving and devoted 7-year-old, very healthy and neutered, Leonberger/Chow mix dog who became a hapless victim of the poor economy when his former owner was forced to move into a small, "no pets" apartment. For months, Leon's owner tried to "hide" her beloved dog from the landlord by not taking the dog out. But, sadly, Leon was finally discovered and his owner was forced to give him up or face eviction. Leon has lived with a CAT and is "loving and playful" with cats and he has also lived with children and according to former owner, "loves children." Leon was initially very distraught when losing his home and winding up in the city pound. He landed on the Euthanasia list. But, the behaviorist at the shelter (recognizing the good in this dog) pulled him at the last second and begged tor Leon to get a second chance. That is where we are now with Leon. He has a temporary "reprieve" but we desperately need someone to step forward to either adopt Leon or foster this wonderful dog. The last thing his former owner pleaded with us is, "PLEASE DON'T LET LEON DIE! He is the most wonderful dog in the world and will love and be totally devoted to any family willing to give him a chance. PLEASE DON'T LET HIM DIE!!" We are trying to prevent Leon from dying, but in a packed city animal shelter that has to put animals down every day that may not be easy. He is a mature dog and a large dog. But, there is simply more of Leon to love. If interested in either adopting Leon or helping us to save him, you MUST CALL (212) 427-8273 immediately. Time is running out for Leon despite the desperate pleas of his heartbroken former owner. Please help us save him!
Sporty's former owners apparently didn't notice when his outgrew his puppy collar. Instead of removing it and buying a new collar, they allowed Sporty's collar to become imbedded in the dog's neck. Then, at some point, they abandoned Sporty. Sporty arrived at the city shelter as a "stray" with his collar less than an inch from cutting into his juggler vein. But, despite the obvious cruelty and ignorance of his former owners, Sporty is well, a real "sport!" The young black Lab mix has a cheery and optimistic outlook on life and LOVES PEOPLE! He would be the ideal family dog. Sporty has been rescued and undergone surgery at our vet to remove the imbedded collar. He is doing very well now and is fully recovered. The only problem is, Sporty needs a loving and responsible home! Currently, Sporty is sitting in a cage at our vet. And as kind as vet techs are to him and as cheery as Sporty is, boarding is not a home. Sporty is on the smaller side (only 40 lbs). He is healthy, (now) neutered, seemingly housebroken, good around other dogs and just a joy to be around! Can you show this forgiving and trusting pup that people and life are indeed a joy? If interested in providing either a reliable foster or loving adoptive home for Sporty, please CALL us (NOT email) at (212) 427-8273. After coming (literally) close to an inch of losing his life due to neglect, Sporty now deserves people who will be attentive and responsible and love this dog as much as he loves people.
Can anyone find sympathy and love for an older gal? Bobo is a mature, (about 8 to 10-year-old) all American (Shepherd mix) "mutt" who was originally abandoned by her family to the city pound when they "moved." Bobo quickly attached and endeared herself to one of the shelter volunteers. She is a very loving and devoted dog. We thought we had a foster for Bobo, but the people reneged at the last minute, saying they "didn't want to get attached" to an older dog because Bobo "might not get adopted." Is that the new reality for cats and dogs who get dumped after being years in a family? Do we as a culture now say that they are "too old" to care about or consider? There is still a lot of life, vitality and love in Bobo. Her health is good and she is perfectly capable of going for long walks with anyone who can open their heart and home to her. Bobo is WONDERFUL WITH CHILDREN, TOTALLY HOUSEBROKEN AND GOOD WITH OTHER DOGS AND CATS! Sadly, Bobo now faces death in the city pound as we have no foster or adoptive home to send her to. Time is quickly running out for this loyal and loving dog who has so much love to give. Can you help us save Bobo? if so, please CALL US AS SOON AS POSSIBLE (Not email!) at (212) 427-8273. Bobo's life is literally on the line unless someone can find it in their heart to care about an older gal.
Laci is a lovely and sweet tempered Jindo/Shiba Inu type dog who was dumped (along with her Chow companion) at the city shelter without explanation from her former owner. We can only guess that the former owner ran into some personal or financial problems in abandoning his two mature (about 5 to 7-year-old) and well conditioned dogs. Laci is medium sized (about 50 lbs), seemingly housebroken, healthy, easy to walk and of calm, friendly disposition. Unfortunately, her "time" in the shelter has run out. While we have a foster home for her Chow companion, we do not have foster or adopter for Laci. Can you help us save Laci by offering emergency foster for this lovely dog? If so, please CALL US immediately (Not email!) at (212) 427-8273. Thousands of animals are now being abandoned in shelters due to financial hardships on owners. Unless we can find emergency fosters for many of these animals, they face certain death in overcrowded shelters that simply do not have the cage space to hold them until adoptive homes can be found. We need animal lovers to step up to the plate to help animals and save lives. Can at least one person or family help us save Laci? Please call now, if you can.
Lady is a very pretty, somewhat timid and shy (though gentle) Chow mix who was dumped at the city shelter by people who claimed to have"no time" for her. Judging by the poor and shaggy condition of Lady's coat as well as her thin body condition, we can only presume that Lady's former people could not find five minutes in the day to either brush their dog or pour some food in the bowl for her. They must have been very "busy." Lady is easy to handle and walk, seems good around other dogs and appears to be housebroken. She is somewhat on the smallish side weighing in at only 35 lbs. She is approximately 5 to 7-years-old. Currently, Lady is in the city pound and needs to get out immediately. We are seeking a reliable foster or adoptive home as soon as possible. Can you help us save Lady? If so, please CALL US immediately (NOT email) at (212) 427-8273. Because she is in a euthanizing shelter, Lady's situation is EXTREMELY URGENT.
Maggie is an adult Eurasian-type dog (Chow, Samoyed and Keeshund) who was callously tied up outside the city shelter and abandoned. We therefore, don't know any of Maggie's history and background other than she is a very easy-going, sweet and easy-to-handle dog. Maggie appears to be housebroken and cheerful around other dogs. She is great to walk on the leash. Currently, Maggie is in a very crowded and packed city pound and needs to get out as soon as possible. We are seeking immediate foster or possible adoption for Maggie who is estimated to be around 5 to 7-years-old. Can you help us save Maggie? If so, please CALL as soon as possible (212) 427-8273 (Not email!!) With so many animals being dumped just prior to summer holiday and vacation periods, Maggie does not have the luxury of time in the animal pound. This beautiful and sweet dog's situation is EXTREMELY URGENT.
Lola is a 4-year-old, beautiful, fully trained and housebroken, healthy and affectionate Chow/Retriever mix who was rescued from the city shelter. Lola is wonderful with people and kids, as well as medium sized and larger dogs. According to her former owner, Lola was also accepting of and gentle around a Mother cat and kittens who took up residence in her dog house. Currently, Lola is in a boarding facility and according to those taking care of her, she is a pure pleasure. We would however love to get Lola into a real home as soon as possible as the boarding space is desperately needed for other dogs being killed in our shelters. PLEASE CALL US (not email) if interested in Lola to possible foster or preferable adopt. (212) 427-8273. She is a truly fabulous dog!
Nena is a beautiful and extremely gentle, soulful, black Chow who recently lost her home when her former owner left and moved to Europe. Though "lost" in the city pound where she was callously abandoned, Nena nevertheless welcomes a gentle touch and soft rubbing on her rump. Unfortunately, due to Nena's story being an all too common one these days (i.e. discarding of pets when one moves or travels.) the city pound where Nena is currently being housed, is packed with animals and is forced to "euthanize" for space within days of a cat or dog's arrival. In other words, Nena's "time" on this earth is severely limited, UNLESS she can find IMMEDIATE caring person(s) to take her home either as a "foster" dog or ideally an adopted, wanted pet. We are very confident that Nena will bring nothing but JOY, peace and pleasure to anyone kind enough to open his/her heart to her. Questions? Guarantees? No, we cannot answer every question about Nena, nor can we guarantee how she (or any dog) will be in every conceivable human situation. But, we do know that she is GOOD, balanced and peaceful dog. Just look at Nena's gentle, expressive face. Eyes don't lie. If interested in helping to save lovely, soulful Nena, you need to CALL us immediately (NOT email!) -- before her time in the pound runs out. (212) 427-8273. This is a matter of life and death urgency. Please be earnest and serious.
Just prior to the July 4th weekend, a ragged and horribly matted Chow Chow was dropped off at the city pound as a "stray." Staffers at the shelter named the dog, (who was estimated to be around 6 to 9-years-old) " Leon." Due to the fact Leon was easy-going, gentle and mellow, he was placed into Adoptions. But, who was going to adopt a filthy, matted and obviously very neglected dog? Especially on one of the biggest celebratory weekends of the year? No one. Fortunately, for Leon, a volunteer groomer offered to clean Leon up and shave all the mats off. The grooming job required 3 hours during which, Leon sat peacefully throughout the ordeal and did not even require a muzzle. But, now that he has been cleaned up, where is Leon to go? Sadly, Leon is still at the animal pound and his "time" is fast running out. Leon faces euthanasia, unless he can IMMEDIATELY find a foster or adopter before this weekend. Leon is now out of the Adoption ward (due to space) and can only go to Rescue. But, we have NO WHERE to put Leon! Our foster and boarding spaces are all full due to the crunch of summer animal abandonments and lack of adoptive or foster offers. It now appears this sweet senior Chow gentleman endured 3 hours of beautifying only to face death! Can you help us save Leon? If so, you MUST CALL US (not email!) immediately as Leon's situation is now DIRE and and quite literally, "11th HOUR!" (212) 427-8273. Please don't let Leon's would be "Cinderella" story turn instead into a Shakespearean tragedy! We need your HELP NOW in order to save Leon!
Napoleon is a silly, affectionate mush. He has enough love to fill up the whole world. But, alas, he only needs one family or person to open arms and accept him. Napoleon's story is that he ended up in the pound due to a cruel rule that recently went into effect in New York City forcing tenants of city housing to give up their dogs over 30 lbs. Napoleon was such a family pet. According to his former owners, Napoleon LOVES CHILDREN, OTHER DOGS AND CATS! He is housebroken, responsive to commands and training and loves to GIVE KISSES! Sadly, due to space constraints, this lover of a dog ended up on the shelter Euthanasia list, despite all the "Alerts" the shelter sent out to rescues on Napoleon. Can you help us save him? We urgently need a foster or adoptive home for Napoleon or, despite all his charm, cheerfulness and love, he will be put down. Napoleon is 4-years-old, 54 lbs and is an Staffordshire Bull Terrier mix. Please open your heart to this sweetie of a dog as he is willing to give you his on a silver platter. Please CALL US at (212) 427-8273 (NOT email!) if you can help us save Napoleon!
Oden is an incredibly gentle, sweet, loving and patient, Cattle Dog/Staffie mix who arrived at the city shelter after his former owner was taken to a hospital extremely "intoxicated." Apparently, the owner hasn't sobered up yet enough to reclaim his dog at the pound. Oden is 6-years-old, already neutered, seemingly good around other pets and extremely loving with people and we would imagine, kids. He did very well on all his behavior tests and is a real sweetie pie to spend time with. Unfortunately, "time" has run out for Oden in the shelter and he has ended up on the Euthanasia list. Oden knows and is very responsive to his name as well as commands. There is little doubt he would make a wonderful family dog (or just a really loyal and devoted friend to anyone). Please help us save this smallish (44 lb) dog who is a dream to walk and a sheer pleasure to be around. If you can foster or adopt Oden, you must CALL US IMMEDIATELY (NOT email!) at (212) 427-8273 as we have less than 48 hours to come up with a miracle for Oden!
Alpha is a handsome, (approximately) 7-year-old Chow/Keeshund mix who arrived at the city shelter after his owner died. Although initially depressed at first, Alpha responds well to kind handling and shows himself to be a gentle and seemingly well trained dog. He enjoys a brisk walk and seems to be very comfortable around other animals. Unfortunately, Alpha's "time" in the city pound is very limited and he needs to find an immediate foster or adopter or face euthanasia. Can you be the one to show this devoted dog that there is life and hope after loss of a loved one? If so, please call us immediately (NOT email!) at (212) 427-8273. Tragically, this time of year due to increases in animal abandonments and slowdowns in adoptions (due to vacations and traveling), animals in our shelters do not have the luxury of time on their side. Alpha's situation, therefore, is extremely urgent. Please call us if you can help save Alpha.
