Once you have decided that the Kees is the right breed for you, you have a few options.
1) Rescue. There are many great Kees in foster homes needing to find permenant homes with families they can love. These Kees were owned previously by people who just did not chose either the right time for a dog, or the right breed.
They are loving dogs, and many have Excellent temperments. They just need love, care & attention.
A good place to see pictures & bios of some Kees needing permenant homes is, Keeshond Rescue Web
2) Puppy. If you are looking for a show prospect or just a compainion NEVER EVER buy a puppy in a pet store. You have no idea what the history of the parents are, you also are unable to determine if any health problems have been cleared for. In 99% of pet store puppies, they have not. Always look for a reputable breeder. Below is a list of things to look for in a reputable breeder.
a)A reputable breeder requires that all pet quality animals be spayed/neutered. They are interested in bettering the breed, thus are not going to permit pet quality to be bred.
b) A reputable breeder requires a contract, which will vary from breeder to breeder, but explains the rights of the buyer & seller, altering, health information and guaruntee information.
c)A reputable breeder shows interest in, love for and knowledge of the breed. He/she CARES about placing puppies in good homes and will often interview potential buyers and even may ask for references. Also he/she may refuse to sell a puppy.
d) A reputable breeder will guaruntee a puppies general health, and have had the mother AND father both tested for genetic defects. BEWARE of breeders who deny hereditary defects in their breed and or lines. If not properly cleared (and ask to see certificates) then that puppy may end up with defects and could suffer with pain.
e) The environment of the breeder & dogs is clean and well maintained.
f)A reputable breeder is actively involved in the dog fancy, including showing, and or breed clubs.
g) A reputable breeder is willing to answer questions, and is willing to provide names of others who have purchased pups.
h) A reputable breeder will allow you to meet the puppies parents, if availible, if not they are willing to show pictures.
i)A reputable breeder follows up on ALL puppies. He/she is interested in how the puppies develope physically & mentally, willing to help with any problems the owners are facing as well as any health concerns.
I have also included a link to a page in which Keeshonden breeders have litters posted. In order to post on this page the breeders MUST provide information on the many things. If they do not meet the required standard they are NOT posted on this page.
