About the North Carolina GenWeb Project

In March and April, 1996, a group of genealogists organized the Kentucky Comprehensive Genealogy Database. The idea was to provide a single entry point for all counties in Kentucky, where collected databases would be stored. In addition, the databases would be indexed and cross-linked, so that even if an individual were found in more than one county, they could be located in the index.

At the same time, volunteers were found who were willing to coordinate the collection of databases and generally oversee the contents of the web page. The NC GenWeb Project is an extension of the KY GenWeb Project. My name is Craig Floyd and I'm the volunteer responsible for Gates County.  Please contact me if you have a link you think should be included, if you would like to volunteer to do lookups or if you have suggestions or comments.

About Gates County

Gates was formed in 1779 from Chowan, Hertford, and Perquimans counties. Named in honor of General Horatio Gates, commander of the American Army at the Battle of Saratoga, it lies in the northeastern part of North Carolina, bounded by Camden, Chowan, Hertford, Pasquotank, and Perquimans counties, and by the state of Virginia. The Legislature of 1830-31 passed an act which changed the name of the county seat from Gates Court House to Gatesville.
