At a Circuit Court
held for Albemarle County the 18th day of May 1853. On the motion of
William Ward executor of Roger Thompson deceased, the court doth certify that on the 18th
day of May 1853, Edward I. Thompson of the County of Albemarle, personally appeared in
open court in the Circuit Court of the said County and being first duly sworn, stated
Roger Thompson departed this life on some day in the winter of 1838, between the 25 of
December 1838 and the 1st of January 1839 at which time he was eighty nine
years and nine months old or thereabouts, leaving the following named children who
survived him to wit: William Thompson, Nicholas Thompson, Nathaniel Thompson, Jr., Mary
Franklin wife of Richard Franklin, Elizabeth Ballard, Sarah Ward wife of Samuel Ward,
Susan Ward wife of William Ward. The said Roger Thompson had been an applicant for a
pension under the law of the United States, but had failed in his application in
consequence, as he informed the witness of his not having been engaged the full term of
six months in the military service of the United States. The witness has no interest
whatever in the estate of the said Roger Thompson nor in the estate of either of his
children, and none whatever in the estate of the said Roger Thompson and none whatever in
any pension or claim for compensation in land or money that the said Roger Thompson may be
entitled to claim on account of the military service of the said Roger.
Captain Robert D.
Burruss? also of said county also acknowledged in open court on same day, and on oath
belified that he knew the said Roger Thompson, that he departed this life on the 30th
or 31st of December 1838 and was buried on the 1st of January
1839, he was a very old man some eighty or ninety years of age. The witness
testified that he had no sort of interest in any compensation no land or money or claim to
pension, which may belong to the representatives of said Roger Thompson for military
services rendered by the said Thompson, either under the laws of the United States, or
state of Virginia. All of which is ordered to be certified. And the court further
certifies that the said Edmund I Thompson and Robert D. Bunup? are Gentlemen of
respectability, and that the said testimony is setelled? to full credit and
confidence. In testimony that this foregoing is truly copied from the records of
said court, I Ira Garrett Clerk of the said court hath hereunto set my hand and affixed
the seal of said Court, this 11th day of July 1853 in the 78th year
of the Commonwealth.

Madam:
I have to advise you from
the papers in the Revolutionary War pension claim R.10552, it appears that Roger Thompson
was born in 1750 in Albemarle County, Virginia.
While a resident of said Albemarle County, he enlisted in 1778 or 1779 in Captain John Miller's Company, Colonel Francis Taylor's Regiment, and after serving three or four days, he was detailed to deliver several letters and then discharged; he enlisted in May 1781 and served one month under Captain John Miller and Colonel Holt Richeson; and from July 1781, he served two months under Captain Thomas Martin or Captain John Martin.
He applied for pension October 2, 1832, while a resident of Albemarle County, Virginia, but the claim was not allowed, as he did not serve six months as required by the Act of June 7, 1832, under which he applied.
Soldier died December 30 or 31, 1838, leaving the following children- William; Nicholas; Nathaniel, Jr.; Mary, wife of Richard Franklin; Elizabeth Ballard; Sarah, wife of Samuel Ward; and Susan, wife of William Ward.
The name of soldier's
wife is not on record, and there is no further information on file as relative to
children.
Respectfully,
Winfield Scott
