1. William Pettit. Born ca 1815 in England. William
died in Valley Falls, Jefferson County, Kansas. They came to New
York City between 1835 and 1837, moved to Monmouth,
Warren County, IL before 1839, then to Valley Falls in 1857. He
ran a saloon
on their farm near North Cedar which is about 5 miles west of
Valley Falls.
William died at Dave Coleman's near Denison, Kansas. His father
told him
when he left England "A rolling stone gathers no moss."
An official
letter came from England some time after William died, addressed
to "William
Pettit and heirs." His son William said it was not for him
and the letter
was never claimed.

" Sylvia Marie Pettit was born in Monmouth, Warren County,
Illinois on
September 1, 1839, and died after a lingering illness at her home
in
Valley Falls on February 9, 1910 at the age of 70 years, 5 months,
8 days.
In 1857 she removed with her parents to Kansas and has lived in
or near
Valley Falls ever since. On March 25, 1860 she was united in marriage
to A.J. Gunn of Valley Falls. To this union seven children were
born,
three with the husband having preceeded her to the beyond. Those
who
survive her- Ed Gunn of Wichita, Kansas; Alpha Gunn of St. Joseph,
Missouri;
Mrs. W.H.Nation of White City, Kansas; and Mrs. G.W. Wiles of
Bixby,
Oklahoma. Besides her children she leaves two sisters, Mrs. George
Reppert of Valley Falls and Mrs. Lyons of New Mexico, one brother
William
Pettit of Valley Falls, six grandchildren and one great grandchild.
In 1887
she became a Christian uniting with the Christian Church of Valley
Falls
and remained a faithful member until she was called to her reward.
The
funeral service was held from the Christian Church by her pastor,
I.A.
Wilson, Friday at 2 P.M. Interrment in Rose Hill Cemetery."

Mrs. Elnora Irene Pettit , 85, died Sunday at the home of her
daughter, Mrs.
Rose Johnson, Route 6, Topeka, and burial was in the Valley Falls
Cemetery
Tuesday afternoon, following a funeral service in Topeka.
Mrs. Pettit was born October 21, 1863 at Altoona, Illinois
where she lived
for 18 years. She came to Valley Falls in 1881, making her home
here for 14
years, going to Topeka 1896, where she had lived since. She was
a member of
the Christian Church. Surviving are 5 daughters; Mrs. Nellie Quested
of New
Cambria, Mrs. Dollie Tedder of Clear Lake, Iowa, Mrs. Bessie Olson,
Mrs. May
Guffer (actually Guffey) and Mrs. Johnson all of Topeka; two brothers,
I.V.
Miller of Minnesota and Alec Miller of Topeka; 17 grandchildren
and 22 great
grandchildren.
