The End of Skeeter's Story


I created this page about one year ago originally about six months after we began the journey of trying to rehabilitate Skeeter's aggressive behavior. Sadly, this journey ended tonight when our vet, Dr. Fong, eased Skeeter back into the arms of Artemis and set her little soul free of the pain and fear with which she lived so long.

Our decision to send her home was very painful and maybe began the day we wiped the cobwebs of denial from our eyes and began her retraining.

In our goal to help her be a happier, more peaceful and less aggressive dog, sadly we were not successful, but in other ways we succeeded with her beyond what we could have imagined.

So many aggressive dogs abused, mistreated in the name of training, abandoned to lonely lives in back yards, and finally, loathed and feared are abandoned to pounds or the streets.

What we learned from Skeeter was to not abandon her in one especially important way: we did not abandon her emotionally. It would have been so much easier in a way to blame her and relegate her to a marginal existence, but instead, we have spent the last year and a half of her life with her in our company...an important member of our family.

Through all of this, we still held hope for her and for us, but it was not to be. No single incident precipitated today's decision, rather it was the realization that we had that we were having the same conversation about what to do next over and over with no resolution.

We miss her more than I can ever say, and I know my heart is broken in a way that will never be repaired, but from our experience have grown many friends, allies, supporters. This page, the list. You are out there and I know that some of you will succeed and are hearts are with you.

We know someday we'll be opening our hearts and our home to a new dog.

The love Skeeter taught us will be waiting...
