MAJOR JAMES FINNELL Served in the American
Revolution from Nov 1777 to Dec 1778 as a Corporal in
the Virginia militia company commanded by Captain
Alexander S. Dandridge. Because of this service James
was entilted to Bounty land in Kentucky but it is not
sure if the land he obtained in KY was a result of this
Military service. In Madison Co, Ky on 5 Aug 1789 James
was commissioned as a Lieutenant and was still serving
as such in the 19th Regt and still serving as such in
1797. On Dec 1800 he was a Major in the 1st Battalion,

ISAAC M. FINNELL "Ike" ends A Long Carreer as
Printer
Algona Figure for a Half Century Has "Gone West"
Ike has laid down his printer's "stick" and will
not be back. The printer's case all the paraphernalia
of a printer's shop will know him no more. At long last
his hands have been washed clean of printer's ink
forever.
For death came to Isaac M. Finnell yesterday
morning as it comes finally to all men. At half past
three the spirit left the body which had become too
worn and frail to cope further with life, and the
nervous body was at rest.
For two years "Ike' had been failing. At work in
the shop he noted and spoke of it himself. A year and
a half ago, on his own motion he retired, but he was a
frequent visitor till a few weeks ago. Then his legs
began to fail and he suffered a stroke. There were two
more strokes before the end, and he was not conscious
in the last days.
     Came Here from Lu Verne
"Ike" as he was familiarly known to all friends
was in his 77th year. He was born in 1865, the last
year of the Civil War, and last May 3 was his 76th
birthday anniversary. He was born in Bureau County,
Ill, and was brought by his parents to Iowa. The family
first lived for a time at Victor near Grinnell, then
came to the Lu Verne neighborhood.
It was as a young man at LuVerne that Ike
developed an interest in the printer's trade. He had
started out as a carpenter, but life in a printing shop
appealed to him more, and shortly he was setting and
distributing type for the Courier at Algona. That was
long before the day of the Typesetting machine, Homer
I. Wasson then owned the paper.
In later years Ike often recalled his beginning
days as a "Printer's devil" at 50 cents a week.
               Partner in Courier
Ike turned out to be a faithful and efficient
employe, and when J.W. Hinchon bought the paper in 1886
he kept Ike on the job. Twelve years later, when Ike
and J.W. Haggard, now senior Upper Des Moines
Publisher, talked of going into a printing partneship
at Bancroft, Mr Hinchon offered Ike a partner interest
in the Courier, and the offer was accepted.
From then on till World war time the Courier
prospered under Hinchon & Finnell, and of the Three
Algona papers then existing it has the largest
circulation. But Mr Hinchon was aging and Ike in the
Wilson Administration had been appointed Postmaster.
they concluded to sell and did sell, but the new
ownership, was not successful, and the paper was in
1918 sold to the Advance and the Upper Des Moines and
was discontinued
               Serves as Postmaster
Ike then served as postmaster nine years retiring
in 1922, or thereabouts. On retirement he entered
Advance employ, in which he continued till finl
retirement. During most of his Advance service he as
advertizing executive, and he took as much interest in
the shop as if he owned it.
A few years ago Ike celebrated a half century as a
printer by entertining all of Algona's newspaper
people.
Ike was a member of the Catholic church. He was a
life long democrat and was influential in democratic
county politics.
          Two Sons and Daughter
Ike was married twice. His first wife was Flora A.
Tiss. Their marriage took place February 19 1888. After
her untimely death Ike married Laura Everett on January
4, 1910. There were no children by the first marriage
but there are two sons by the second: Evan E., present
Advance Advertising manager, and Edgar C. now of
Chicago. There is also a daughter, Mrs Zada Finnell-
Butler, at present in state employ at Des Moines. There
are two grandchidren. A brother Robert lives in
Whittemore, and another brother, Charles, at Lake
Geneva, Wis.

One Story that has been sent me by some of the
Ohio Finnells is as follows:

Reuben Finnell* cousin Wesley Finnell and his sister
were taken by Indians. Their Mother had taken them west
in a covered wagon. They stopped to camp and she sent
the children after a bucket of water from the river.
The Indians came along took then. The Mother never knew
what happened to them. The girls hair turned white and
she didn't live long, but Wesley liked them [the
Indians]. He has been back on visits then would return
back out west.

* the person this story is from is, Reuben Hamilton
Finnell; b.10 Feb 1880 Roscoe, OH; d.21 Sep 1941,
Roscoe, OH, the son of Thomas Arthur Finnell and
Harriet P. McClain
EDITORS NOTE: I am not sure what the basis for this
bit of Family lore is, but it is interesting. I think I
have accounted for all of the Finnell First cousins for
Reuben, but have found none that would fit this story..

He served his Country well - Was John Finnell's
epitaph
It was a time when Kentucky was at war with itself
with invading armies poised on the state's borders.
The man chosen by the governor to shepherd the
commonwealth through this crisis was a Covington
resident, John W. Finnell.
Finnell was a many of many talents - lawyer,
businessman, Temperance speaker, journalist and
politican. But a man basically forgotten by most state
histories.
and yet at the critical hour of the Civil War, it
was Finnell who served as adjutant general in charge of
all of the commonwealth's troops in a key border state.
Finnell was born on Christmas Eve 1821, in
Winchester. His ancestors had come to Kentucky from
Orange County, Virginia. His Father, Nimrod L. Finnell,
was a printer and newspaper editor. In 1832 Nimrod
Finnell and Edwin Bryant purchased the Lexington
Observer. In his career, the elder Finnell also
published the Lexington Observer and the
Licking Valley Register. Based in Covington, The
Licking Valley Register was one of the first
major newspapers in Northern Kentucky.
Nimrod Finnell died on Dec 8, 1850.
His son, John W. Finnell, was a quick learner and
a avid student. He graduated from Transylvania
University in Lexington at age 17. He followed his
father into the printing and newspaper business and at
age 19 worked for the Lexington Daily Intelligencer.
In the meantime, Finnell also studied law with
Richard H. Menefee. In 1841 he graduated from
Transylvania's law school. Menefee, a prominent
attorney and politican, is the namesake of Menefee
County, although the county name is mistakenly
misspelled.
After his 21st birthday, Finnell moved to Carlisle
and opened a law office. In 1845, he was elected state
representative from Nicholas County. It was while in
the legistature that Finnell befriended John White
Stevenson, a prominent Covington attorny and
legislator.
Also while serving as a state legislator, Finnell
was offered and took the job of editor with the
Frankfort Commonwealth newspaper. The newspaper
promoted the cause of the Whig Party, of which Finnell
was a member.
In that capacity Finnell became familiar with many
of the political leaders of the state. After John
Jordan Crittenden was elected governor, Chrittenden
appointed Finnell his Secretary of State. Finnell was
27 years old.
After Crittenden resigned to become attorney
general in the cabinet of President Millard Fillmore,
the new governor, John Helm, kept Finnell as his
secretary of state.
After that term ended in 1852, Finnell moved to
Covington and opened a law office. His law knowledge
and accounting skills led to an appointment in 1854 as
special commissioner to the Kenton County and Campbell
County circuit courts during a financial crisis. In
particular, Finnell was asked to straighten out the
financial mess at the Newport Safety Fund Bank and
Kentucky Trust Company Bank. Accounts said Finnell was
so successful the bank creditors eventually were repaid
in full.
Althrough he would later take public stands that
put him in opposition to slavery, Finnell apparently
represented a slaver owner, H. R. Tunstall of
Louisville, in a celebrated case in September 1854. In
that case an Africn - American man had escaped from
Louisville and made it safely across the Ohio River to
Cincinnati, only to be captured there and turned over
to court officials. The court ruled the man had to be
returned to slavery in Louisville.
In February 1859, Finnell was part of a local
delegation attending a political convention in
Louisville. That convention nominated Johua Fry Bell
for governor under the Opposition Party label. Bell
lost to Beriah Magoffin. Bell is the namesake of Bell
County in Southeastern Kentucky.
The same year Finnell was part of a group hat
included William Ernst, Napoleon Stephens and James
Spilman that proposed starting a horse-drawn street car
system in Covington. With the Civil War on the horizon,
it was apparently several years before others would
sucecessfully build the first street car lines in
Northern Kentucky.
In 1860 Finnell again compaigned for Bell. This
time Bell was running for president under the Union
Democrat party label as a compromise candidate in the
bitter election that saw Abraham Lincoln win. Bell
lost, but in 1861 Finnell was elected to the state
legislature from Kenton County under the Union Party
label.
In early 1861, before the outbreak of the Civil
War, Finnell hosted former governor Crittenden at his
home, when Crittenden and Gov Magoffin attended a
peace meeting in Cincinnati with representatives of
Ohio and Indiana.
In a Covington Journal newspaper account during
that visit, Finnell said he supported Crittenden's idea
that is a war started, Kentucky should arm itself and
protect its borders from invasion by either the North
or the South.
As a result of those feelings, Finnell later
proposed driving out Confederate troops by force, after
they moved into the state, and proposed similar action
if Federal troops came to Kentucky. He also advocated
the appointment of Gen. Robert Anderson as Commander of
State troops. When the Confederates opened fire on Fort
Sumter in early 1861 to officially begin the Civil war,
it was Anderson, a Kentucky native, who was in charge
of Union troops at the South Carolina fort.
Such state defense proposals quickly proved
impractical as state militia troops resigned to join
either the Confederate or Federal armies. Governor
Magoffin sided with those wanting to remain in the
Union and on Oct 12, 1861, Magoffin appointed Finnell
adjutant general, placing him in charge of state
troops.
A Cincinnati Commercial newspaper account 10 days
later said Finnell had announced plans to have all the
sewing for underclothing for State soldiers to be done
at Covington. A few days later Finnell also issued an
order prohibiting the sale of alcohol to state troops.
He also began consolidating existing remeants of state
troops into home guard units.
During the next two years Finnell oversaw
operations of the state home guard, which spent much of
its time dealing with Confederate guerillas who burned
bridges, stole horses and generally attempted to keep
Federal troops busy that would otherwise have been sent
to the main war fronts.
Finnell also traveled to check on the conditions
of Kentucky troops stationed outside the state. In one
such trip in May 1862, Finnell traveled to Tennessee to
check on Kentucky troops that had recently taken part
in th battle of Shiloh. Confederate Gen Albert Sidney
Johnson of Mason County had been killed in that battle.
Official records of the war show Finnell spent
much of his time corresponding with Federal troop
leaders. Among them were generals: Horatio Wright,
namesake of the city of Ft Wright; Ormsby Mitchel,
namesake the city of St Mitchell; Green Clay Smith, who
also represented the Covington-Newport area in Congress
during the Civil War; and Lew Wallace, namesake of
Covington's Wallace Woods.
The Louisville Journal newspaper praised Finnell
in a story in August 1862, saying he had assumed a very
difficult task and had proved himself to be a person of
"zeal, judgement, energy, vigilance and tact" and in a
difficult time was serving "his country well and
eminently."
Among the camps Finnell set up one in Campbell
County in June 1863 to organize and train the 53rd
Regiment Kentucky Volunteer Infantry. Accounts say it
was located in Jamestown, which was the city that
merged with Brooklyn to form todays city of Dayton.
Magoffin's term as governor ended in 1863.
Finnell was asked by the new governor to continue as
state adjutant general, but he resigned in September
1863 and returned to his law practice in Covington.
After the war Finnell remained active in politics,
joining the Republican Party. He also was active in the
Temperance movement, speaking at one rally in
Staffordsburg in rural Kenton County in June 1869. At
that rally, 25 people took a pledge to refrain from
drinking alcohol.
Also that year, Finnell's friend from the state
legislature days, John White Stevenson, appointed
Finnell as a representative from Kenton County to a
state commerce convention. Stevenson, at that time, was
governor.
Confederate General Robert E. Lee died on Oct 12,
1870, and among the public displays of mourning was a
mass meeting later that month in Louisville, Finnell
and John C. Breckinridge, a former vice president and
Confederate general, were given the honor of being the
main speakers.
Finnell moved to Louisville and became editor of
the Louisville Daily Commercial in 1872. Later he moved
back to Northern Kentucky, where he owned a couple of
houses, including one in Morning View, where he
entertained guests, according to accounts from 1878.
The Covington based Daily Commonwealth newspaper
later wrote Finnell staged annual Rasberry Festivals at
his home along the Kentucky Central Railroad tracks
near Visalia. That account said a special train car was
used to bring 25 guests to Finnell's home.
In 1881 Finnell was appointed by the president as
collector of internal revenue at Covington. Among those
he would appoint as assistants was W. A. Gaines, a
leader of the Africn-American community in Northern
Kentucky.
Another account at the time said Finnell and his
family lived at 206 Emma St. in Covington. It was
there on April 19, 1881, that his daughter Nellie
married Charles W. Cambron.
Finnell and his wife, Elizabeth, were the special
guests at an old settlers reunion in Nicholas County in
June 1882. It was while living in Carlisle that the
couple had met and married. Elizabeth was the daughter
of Joseph F. Tureman of Nicholas County.
In 1883, Finnell was the guest speaker at a
reunion of Mexican War veterans from Covington,
Newport and Cincinnati.
Elizabeth Finnell died on July 1,1884. Finnell
died in late January 1888 while on a business trip to
Helena, Montana. Both funerals took place at the First
Presbyterian Church, Covington. Both are buried in
Linden Grove Cemetery, Covington.
Finnell's son was longtime United States Clerk.
Like his Father, John W. Finnell's oldest son, Joseph
C. Finnell, also became a lawyer.
Born on March 4, 1854, in Covington, Joseph
Finnell grew up in Covington. He graduated from Centre
College in 1875 and from the Cincinnati Law School in
1878. He worked for the law firm of McKee and Finnell
for several years before being appointed United States
Clerk and Commissioner in 1882.
As clerk, his office was in the federal building
at the southeast corner of Third and Scott streets in
Covington. He held the Clerk-Commissioner's job for 29
years. In 1883 Finnell married Mamie Cochran. Miss
Cochran was the daughter of Col J.C. Cochran. The
marriage took place at the Cochran residence on Garrard
Street in Covington.
The newlyweds lived at 30 W. 11th Street,
Covington. The couple later moved to the Wallace Woods
neighborhood in Coovington.
Joseph Finnell became ill in fall 1910 and lived
for a time at a health resort in Martinsville, Indiana.
He apparently suffered from rheumatsm.
In Februray 1911, he returned to Covington and
underwent an operation at Jewish Hospital in Cincinnati
for gallstones. While reovering from the surgery, his
health worsened and he died on Feb 14,1911, at Jewish
Hospital.
In addition to his wife, Joseph Finnell was
survived by two sons, Joseph C. Finnell, Jr and Samuel
C. Finnell. He is buried in Highland Cemetery.
