Funeral
services will be held this afternoon at 2 o'clock at J.L. Reed Funeral
Home for Edwin Alexander Dunn, Sr., Tampa automobile industry and hotel
executive who died Sunday night at his home.
Mr.
Dunn, who had been in ill health for several years, was a partner in the
Crescent Apts., a hotel owned jointly by him and members of his immediate
family.
He
also was secretary-treasurer of the General Auto Supply Co., and a director
of the General Welding Supply Co., other family business interests.
He previously had been secretary-treasurer of Joe B. Johnson, Inc., the
Buick agency now owned by Giles Motor Co.
Mr.
Dunn was born in Boligee, AL and moved with his parents, the late James
Alonzo Dunn and Elizabeth Ann McKeown, to Homeland, FL, when he was 12
years old. He would have been 79 in October, and had been a resident
of Florida for 66 years.
Death
came at his residence, 609 South Brevard Ave., where he had lived with
his wife, the former Jannie Johnson, since their wedding day 46 years ago
and where, especially during his latter years, he welcomed friends and
business associates to visit in his garden.
Carollers
from Hyde Park Methodist Church traditionally serenaded Mr. Dunn at his
home on Christmas Eve, and as long as his health permitted, were entertained
by him at a party which concluded their carolling season.
He
was prominent throughout his adult life in the congregation of Hyde Park
Methodist Church, and in honor of his long service as an usher there, recently
was made Head Usher Emeritus by vote of the quarterly conference of the
church. He also was an honorary member of the board of stewards and
of the board of trustees of the church, both of which he had served actively
for two generations.
Mr.
Dunn was a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the John Darling Masonic Lodge
and the Egypt Temple of the Shrine. He was a former member of Ye
Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla.
In
addition to his widow, he is survived by his two children, Edwin Alexander
Dunn Jr., and Mrs. H. Grady Lester, Jr.: five grandchildren, Anne and Grady
Lester, Mary, Jannie and Billie Dunn, and a niece, Mrs. Lynwood Parker,
all of Tampa.
The
family has requested that flowers be omitted at the funeral this afternoon,
which will be conducted by the Rev. Laurie G. Ray, assisted by the Rev.
R. J. Parker. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.
