Claude C. Edwards, a pioneer resident of Fremont and Custer counties, passed away Thursday, August 31, at 2>35 p.m., at the age of 81 years and 4 months.

Mr. Edwards was born near Mount Pleasant, Henry county, Iowa, on April 15, 1858. In 1879 Mr. Edwards was employed by the government, driving the wagon trains between Fort Hays, Kan., and Fort Garland, Colo.

Mr. Edwards' memory was wonderful, and he was a very interesting talker. He always enjoyed telling of the real pioneer days and life as it was at that time held many interesting stories. In 1880 he came to Colorado, and in 1881 he was one of the pioneer mail carriets, carrying the mail on horseback between Florence and Greenhorn. Wetmore was at that time where Margaret Springs now is.

In 1885 he was married to Deborah Lyells. She preceded him in death six years ago. For many years Mr. Edwards made his home on the ranch above Wetmore, Colo. The last two years he has lived with his son, Floyd Edwards, and family at Florence. He was a highly respected citizen and loved by all who knew him.

He leaves the following children to mourn the loss of his passing: Floyd F. Edwards and Mrs. Ethel Fuller of Florence, Mrs. Edna Somerville of Pueblo, Mrs. Ida Andis of Alamosa, Charlie Edwards, Edgar Edwards and Grace Edwards of Buena Vista, John Edwards of Denver. Another son, Herbert, passed away two years ago. He is also survived by one brother, Edgar E. Edwards of Canon City; two sisters, Eva Everett of Los Angeles, Calif.; 16 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Funeral services will be held at the Phillipsen mortuary in Florence Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Mrs. Flloyd Juiatt of the Christian Science church will read the service.

Text: MRS. CLAUDE C. EDWARDS OF WETMORE, WHO CAME TO COLORADO BY OX TEAM IN 1871 DIED THIS MORNING IN A PUEBLO HOSPITAL

 

Deborah Lyells Edwards, beloved wife of Claude C. Edwards of Wetmore passed away at Parkview Hospital in Pueblo at 6:55 o'clock this morning from a lingering illness. She had been ill for about nine months.

She was born March 14, 1865 in Union County, Illinois, and was 68 years and four months of age at the time of her death.

Mrs. Edwards was one of the early pioneers of Colorado, having crossed the plains from Mount Vernon, Illinois by ox team with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Lyells in 1871.

A home was established on North Creek near Beulah. It was here that she

married Claude C. Edwards on April 21, 1884.

For'the past 24 years Mr. and Mrs. Edwards have lived at Wetmore.

She is survived by her husband, nine children, Mrs,Burl Andis, Edgar M. Edwards, Herbert L. Edwards and John P. Edwards all of Wetmore. Floyd P. Edwards and Mrs. Ethel Fuller of Florence, Grace E. Edwards of Canon City and Mrs. Edna Somerville of Pueblo. Fifteen granchildren and one sister, Mrs. Margaret Walk of Florence.

Mrs. Edwards was a woman of sterling qualities, always administering to others whenever she could. She had a beautiful disposition and scattered cheer and sunshine wherever she went among a host of friends.

She was a wonderful wife and mother and will deeply mourned by her friends.

Funeral services will be held at the Episcopal church in Florence at two o'clock Friday afternoon under the direction of the Holt Funeral Home. Rev. Benjamin of the Church of Ascension of Pueblo will conduct the services.

Burial will be in the Union Highland cemetery.

Obituary: IMPRESSIVE ARE SERVICES HELD HERBERT EDWARDS

 

Impressive funeral services were held Saturday afternoon from the Holt Funeral chapel for Herbert Lyelle Edwards who passed away October 28 at Buena Vista, Colo., where he had been residing for the past five months. He had suffered for a number of years with a heart ailment, this he bore without ever complaining and always greeted his friends with a smile.

Mrs. Leslie Pope, Christian Science reader of Canon City, conducted the services. A male quartet of Paul Strickland, Avery Watkins, James 0. Chaberlain and Bill Holt, accompanied by Miss Doris John, sang, "No Night There," "The Old Rugged Cross," and "Shepheard Show Me How To Go."

Those in charge of the beautiful floral tokens were Mrs. Floyd Huiatt, Mrs. Howard Lloyd, Mrs. Roland Blunt, Jr., and Tom Warner of Canon City, Hugh McClain and H. L. Humphrey of Buena Vista.

Interment was in Union Highland cemetery.

FUNERAL SERVICES FOR MRS. E.E. EDWARDS WHO DIED EARLY TODAY WILL BE HELD FROM HIGH SCHOOL AUDITORIUM TUES P.M.

Jennie L. Edwards, prominent resident of Florence for the last 35 years, died at her home in West Florence at one o'clock Monday morning, after an illness of nearly six months.

Mrs. Edwards had been suffering from diabetis during that time and her death was not unexpected.

Less than three weeks before her death that is on June 3, Mr. and Mrs. Edwards celebrated their fortieth wedding anniversary.

Mrs. Edwards was a direct descendant of John Knox, founder of the Presbyterian church, and great Scotish leader of the Reformation.

The deceased was born at Tranent, Meadowmill, Scotland, on May 8, 1869, and was 62 years, 1 month and 21 days at the time of her death.

She came to this country when she was 15 years of age, and located in the state of Illinois. Three years later she moved to Hays City, Kansas.

On June 3, 1893 [note: should be 1891?] she was united in marriage with E. E. Edwards The couple moved to Florence on April 12, 1896 and have made their home here ever since.

Mrs. Edwards is survived by her husband, Edgar Eugene Edwards, one son, Clifford Edwards of Encinitas, Calif., four daughters, Mrs. Warren Bertlemen of San Francisco, Calif., Mrs. May Phillips of Edgewater, Colo., Mrs. Edith Currie of Pueblo, and Mrs. Bonnie Searcy of Florence; one sister, Mrs. Anna Pedan of Scotland, and two brothers, John and James Bain of Sioux City, Iowa.

Mrs. Edwards was a member of the Christian Science Church and of the Women of woodcraft.

Funeral services will be held at two o'clock Tuesday afternoon from the high school auditorium. A Christian Science burial service will be read. Internment will be in Union Highland cemetery.

Text: MRS. CHAS.EDWARDS DIES TUESDAY AFTER A MAJOR OPERATION

 

Mrs. Sarah Hannah Edwards, 37 years of age, passed away at Graves hospital at Canon City at 1:15 Tuesday morning, ten days after she had undergone a major operation at the hospital.

The effects of the operation caused the death of the local woman. Mrs. Edwards was well known here, and her legion of friends will be shocked to learn of her untimely death.

She was a native of this section, having been born at Wetmore on July 26, 1895, and having spent her entire life in this vicinity.

She was educated in the Florence schools, and was active in extra curricular work during her high school days.

Mrs. Edwards was very active in church and Lodge work. She was a member of the Christian church, of the O.E.S. No. 25, and was a member of the advisory board of "Rainbow for Girls."

Oh September 23, 1917, she was married to Charles Edwards.

She is survived by her husband, by four sons, Rupert, Robert, Charles and Wesley, her mother, Mrs. Margaret Karch of Florence, two brothers, Edward Karch of Canon City and Henry Karch of Los Angeles and two sisters, Mrs. Sophia Thompson, Lucinda, Pa., and Mrs. Margaret Newell of Wirt, Oklahoma.

Funeral services under the direction of the Holt Funeral Home will be held at the Christian church at a date to be announced later.

Rev. Burgess will have charge of the services and the O.E.S. No. 25 will hold the impressive Eastern Star services at the grave at Union Highland cemetery.
