Jim Ferris was killed in action on December 26, 1943. Here is a note and an excerpt from the Missing Air Crew Report:

Your Uncle, 1st Lt James W. Ferris, 0740780 was killed on a mission to Tarawa. His plane, B-24J 42-73154, crashed about 20 miles south of Wotje Atoll. The folllowing is an excerpt from the MACR, "From the right waist position I observed the No. 2 engine on fire just after we passed over the west of Wotje. We kept slowing down to keep with them. About ten miles from Wotje Atoll No. 154 seemed to lose altitude and strated going down at which time I could see flames shooting out of the waist windows and the fire crept over the fuselage to Nr. 3 engine. The plane kept diving steeper all the time until it fell apart, still burning all over at about five thousand feet altitude. I saw one parachute just before the break up which trailed behind our airplane still not opened; just trailing out. Fuselage of plane disappeared in water and only visible remains were parts of wings burning on water." Fred H. Brown, 2nd LT A.C.
