Exploring the Net

Written by Dianne Hegarty for MTGSC

This course is designed to provide the leader with information to help their girls complete any of the new recognitions involving the internet:

I do not profess to be a computer expert and the content herein is designed merely to share the knowledge that I do have. URL's are listed (rather than merely being linked to by description as on other pages in this site) so that you can have a printed resource if you so desire.

History 101

  1. What is the Internet ?(http://www.internet101.org/internet.html)
  2. What is the World Wide Web? (http://www.internet101.org/web.html)

Safety

Always a concern and not yet listed in Safety-Wise, safety takes on a whole new meaning when you open yourselves up to the entire world online.

  1. http://www.yahooligans.com/docs/safety/

Internet Service Providers (ISP)

A service provider is a company that you pay to receive a link up to the world wide web. The services they provide are varied as is the cost of each.

Browsers

A browser is a program that you use to look at pages on the internet. It also allows you to navigate from one place on the net to another.

  1. See chart at http://www.rtis.com/nat/user/toolbox/browsers.htm
  2. For this course, we will use both Netscape and AOL's browser for comparison
  3. Bookmarks/Favorite places

Search Engines

To search for information on the internet, connect to a search engine and let it do the work for you. For best results, you must be specific with your topic using the narrowest term you can to describe your topic.

  1. Yahoo (http://www.yahoo.com) - also has a subject index for browsing                    a. Yahooligans for kids (http://www.yahooligans.com/)

Web Rings

Many sites that are similar in content or topic are connected together via a "webring". You can travel from one site to the next and stay within the ring by linking to the "webring" symbol. There are several Scouting ones:

  1. WAGGGS webring
  2. Scouting Webring
  3. Spider Scout Webring

Website Construction

I do not profess to be an expert on this topic my any means. This website was constructed using AOL Press, an HTML editor downloadable for AOL members. It is a good idea to know a bit about HTML (hyper text markup language - the language used put information on the web) when using a text editor since problems may occur and you will need to know how to fix them. To this end, I read Web Publishing with HTML 3.2, third Edition by Laura Lemay.
