This was intended as a one-day workshop to complete the Paper Works Interest Project. Since we had a volunteer to teach woodworking at this time (there was an extra fee for this portion of the workshop), girls were also given the option of doing woodworking instead of one of the activities (thus having to complete this activity on their own in order to earn the Interest Project.). We had approximately 25 participate in the following:
9:00-9:15am | Check-In/Welcome |
9:15-10:15am | Morning Session Rotation #1 |
10:15-11:15am | Morning Session Rotation #2 |
11:15-12:15pm | Morning Session Rotation #3 |
12:15-1:00pm | Lunch |
1:00-2:00pm | Afternoon Session Rotation #1 |
2:00-3:00pm | Afternoon Session Rotation #2 |
3:00-4:00pm | Afternoon Session Rotation #3 |
Girls who were not doing woodworking were divided into 3 equal groups and a rotation schedule was set up so that each individual would complete each activity on a rotating basis. The activities were as follows:
Decoupage (SB#4): We purchased wooden plaques and brought in magazines and old Christmas cards. The girls were also told to bring in pictures if they wanted. They cut out pictures (we had decorative scissors available) and decoupaged them to the plaque.
Bookmaking (SP#2): We made scrapbook/journals out of cardboard, paper stock, tacky paper (like a contact paper but repositionable - I would recommend contact paper instead next time), and cloth tape. We used the book Exploring the Hand Arts, published by GSUSA in 1955, page 32-33 (simple booklet) for the design. Some had trouble completing this in an hour.
Computer Stationary/Punch Art Cards (T#3, SP#4): Since we had 2 computers available, 2 girls at a time designed their own notecards for whatever occasion they chose which we later printed out. When they were not designing their computer cards, they were making punch cards (Resource: "The Scrap Happy Guide to Punchin'"). I found a site on the Internet that was requesting cards for sick children so each girl chose which child she was making it for then wrote a note inside and addressed it. They were mailed after the event.
Woodworking (Home Improvement SB#1): Each girl made a small wooden shelf. They used an electric sander as well as sanded by hand then used tools to put it together. The finishing (staining, painting, etc.) was done on their own.
Calligraphy (CE#2): We had a consultant talk about calligraphy and its origins. Demonstrations were held and then girls tried their hand at it while designing invitations and cards.
Quilling (SB#3 Alternate): The art of quilling (paper rolling) was taught. Each girl made at least one design and decorated a small gift bag with her design.
Origami (SB#5): Each girl had the opportunity to make 3-5 origami designs.
Woodworking: See Morning Afternoon Session Rotation description.
