This Page is Dedicated to All Those with Alzheimer's Disease and their Families Who've Shared the Pain
When I was only 9 I lost one of my best buddies to Alzheimer's Disease, my grandmother, "Nanny." At that age, I didn't understand why she had to go and I didn't realize that the only person I had known in the years I'd known her was the Nanny that was sick. You see, to me, she was fun and I was able to spend a lot of time with her. We laughed and played a lot together and to me her behavior seemed perfectly normal.
One of the first signs that something wasn't right was when she saw an "eye" in the toilet. I didn't know what she was talking about and since we were having a family get-together, I let my mom know what she had seen. After gathering in the bathroom to examine the situation, we realized that the "eye" she referred to was the little drain hole at the bottom of the toilet. She insisted it was an eye. I don't know what else came up that alerted my grandfather ("Pops") and the rest of the family that things weren't right with Nanny but that stands out in my mind.
I know as the disease progressed she lost control of many things in her life. And, it was painful for her children and her husband to see the deterioration.
After Nanny had passed away, Pops remarried eventually and, incredibly, his second wife also was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease some years later. She too died from this horrible disease.
It's always been a nagging fear that this disease is hereditary or at least they believe it can be. I see my aunts and uncles now the age that my Nanny was when she became sick and I worry for them, as well as my own parents. I really hope that a cure is found.
Below are some links that you may find useful to help with questions you may have if this has touched your family in any way. Here's praying that soon researchers come up with a cure!
