1 Hans George Rheyer b: Abt 1645 Metz, Lorraine,
Franz d: Jul 14, 1719 Bohl Pfalz, Germany
- The
name Royer. Miss Elizabeth Reese, A.M. instructor of French in the
University of Nebraska, a Royer descendant has traced the origin of the
name Royer as follows:
- Royer
- verb - from the old French Reve meaning to furrow with little
irrigation trenches. In the Ardennes Mountains it means to ret or steep
tlax.
- Royer
- a meadow
- Royer
- noun - from arie, old form of the work roue, wheel
- Royer
- a wheelwright

..... 2 Sebastian Mathias Royer b: Abt 1676 Metz, France,
Europe d: 1758 Brickerville, Elizabeth Twp, Lancaster Co, PA, USA
- The
following was compiled by Decima Clyde Royer Day with inserts from other
documents:
- To be
born in Metz, France about 1676, and be moved to the Palatinate in
Germany (an area now part of Germany along the Rhine River) at age 9
(1685), indicates that this man suffered and endured the religious
upheavals of the period. His family left the Catholic religion at the
time of Martin Luther. However, both Catholic and Protestant were
persecuted in the borderland area of Alsace-Lorraine, which was
alternately under French or German rule.
- Sebastian
brought his 4 sons to America in 1718, landing in Philadelphia. His
first wife, mother of the 4 sons died before they came to America He
bought 286 acres of land in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, from
William Penn, found of the Colony. Twenty-five (25) years later, he was
naturalized in a meeting of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania at
Philadelphia in April 11-13 1743. (Note from Decima Clyde Royer Day: as
this was some 33 years before the American Revolution, he must have
been naturalized as a British subject.).
- From
the Stauffer Genealogical Database (http://sillg.doit.com/cgi-bin/igmget/)
- On 26
January 1743 Sebastian received a patent from grant of William Penn
family for 281 acres of land in Warwick Twp., Lancaster Co., PA about
one mile south of Brickerville, 1 mile east of 501 on Brucbaker Road,
then left on Rief-Snyder Road. The trustees from the German Zion
Reformed Church where Sebastian was later a deacon, accepted 2<<
acres of this land for a church and cemetery 21 September 1747. Another
tract went to the Emmanuel Luther Church where Agnes attended.
Sebastian was prosperous and a strict churchman. The Zion Reform Church
still stands on the hill up the ravine in which Sebastian's home
nestled (as of the updated record of 19 July 1995). The home is now
gone, but the church has been restored and is used several times a
year. Possible buried in Luth Cem, Brickerville, PA.
- The lands of
Sebastian Royer in a 1875 map are comprised in the farms of Reuben
Brubaker, Peter Brubaker, Jacob Brubaker, Hornberger, Long, and John
Stauffer and perhaps some of the land of Henry Snavely and Marris
Brumbaugh.

............. 3 Emig Royer b: Dec 18, 1707 The
Palatinate, Germany, Europe d: Sep 12, 1804 Lancaster Co., PA, USA
- Emig
had 11 children, only 7 are recorded: 5 sons and 2 daughters.
- The
Americanized name of Emig is Amos.
- Emig bought
property in 1735 in Leacock Township, Lancaster Co, PA. It joined land
of his father. Emig likely united with the Brethren while living here.
Why he and his father left is not known - perhaps religious differences
made associations unpleasant. Sebastian bought land at Brickerville in
1742, or five years before Emig bought at Middle Creek. December 18,
1747, on his 40th birthday, Emig Royer bought of the Penns 214 acres of
land in Cocalico township, Lancaster Co, PA. This became the old
homestead on the Middle Creek. It seems that he borrowed L600 from James
Benezet, Merchant, Philadelphia, to whom he gave a bond for this amount.
August 9, 1754, Emig Royer, yeoman, deeded this property to Benezet
(L300 of the bond to be paid in 1756) "for and in consideration as
well of the aforesaid Debt or Sum of Three Hundred pounds and in order
better to secure the Payment thereof with interest unto the said James
Benezet". Emig must subsequently have satisfied this debt and have
obtained a clear title to the property (editor). (from Mennonite Family
History, October, 1993, p.150-51)
- Emich and wife,
along with his brother George Royer, united with the Conestoga
Congregation in 1734. Christopher and Anna joined September 13, 1767.
Many of the children of George and Emich Royer were Bretheren and are
found on the names of the Conestoga Brethren Church lists. Both the
Landis and Royer families have contributed many descendants and
numberous ministers to the Church of the Brethren and its related
branches, indicating a strong tie of loyalty to the Dunker faith over a
period of many generations.

- Christopher
Royer and Anna Landis were baptized in Brethern Church in Lancaster,
Pennsylvania on September 18, 1767. The next year his eldest son was
born.
- He had
9 children - 4 sons and 5 daughters.
- From
the Lancaster records, page 229 of book M., we find that on December
5th, 1766, Christopher received a farm in Earl Township from John Landis
and his wife. This John is the likely the "Hannes" Landis who
was one of the first members of the old Connestoga church of the
Brethren in Lane County. Christopher was a man of means and evidently
able to manage his affairs. He had nine (9) children according to his
will. In the October, 1993 Mennonite Family history, p. 150 eight (8)
children are listed; Mary is not listed, but there is Rebecca, born 22
June 1772, who is married to Jacob Showalter.

- John
Royer, typical of his period, moved many times...and always
Westward...from Pennsylvania to Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Kansas. Not
far from Muncie, Indiana is a town called Royertown, named for John, and
where his family lived for some time.

- The
homestead, 100 acres in East Buffalo Township; 2 miles SE of Vicksburg
Pennsylvania was where Isaac Royer was born. Isaac later told his
daughter, Clyde, he remembered falling down the stairs in the homestead
and it was thought that he had broken his nose. This homestead has been
described as being located on "the great road from Jenkin's Hill to
Mifflinburg", and/or "the great road from Lewisburg to New
Barton (PA)". In 1915 this house was still standing and in use.
- Isaac
enlisted in Piqua, Ohio on August 7, 1862/1863 in Company B, Ohio
Volunteers. In Louisville, Kentucky, sometime about October 1862, Isaac
became ill with fever. His father went to Kentucky and took him back to
Ohio, obviously without either medical or military approval. Between his
recovery of health and re-enlistment, Isaac spent some time at Oberlin
College, Ohio. He re-enlisted in 1864 in Company G, 92nd Illinois
Regiment, at Lena, Illinois. This was known as the "Illinois
Mounted Infantry" commanded by colonel Van Buskirk, under the
calvary command of General Kirkpatrick. This same group, per Isaac, was
known in the Georgia Campaign (under General W.T. Sherman) and the
"Gallant 92nd".
- A
fascinating incident told by Isaac, age 80 to his daughter Clyde:
- When
the 92nd Illinois was with Sherman's Army in the south, Isaac was on
picket duty. Genral Sherman and his orderly rode up to him, and the
General asked Private Royer "Whose quarters are on the hill?"
Royer answered "Major Dunbar's, Sir." General Sherman told
Private Royer to ask Major Dunbar for him..."if he remember the
orders when we left Atlanta?" (Clydes note: Sept 2 or 3, 1964)
Private Royer conveyed the message to the Major and the tents were down
before the General passed again. An order had been issued before
leaving Atlanta that no wall tents were to be used.
- Isaac
was mustered out from the Union Army in Greensboro, North Carolina.
- In
1868, from Lena, Illinois, Isaac and Henry Leigh came by boat, to
Nebraska, landing at Brownsville. There was a cousin in Paunee City,
and Isaac worked stores there, and in Fall City. In 1871 he took out a
soldiers' land-grant in Jewell County, Kansas, just south of Hardy,
Nebraska. About 1880 he bought property and built a house in Hardy
where his family was to live some 40 years.
- With
James H. Fair as a partner, he had a hardware store in Hardy, Nebraska.
From 1891 through 1915, he was Postmaster of Hardy, seeing the office
grow from Fourth Class status to Third Class, with the addition of 3
rural routes. The Presidents under which he served: 23rd President
(1891-1893) - Benjamin Harrison (A Democrat served the 1st two years of
the 24th Presidency, but was removed for inefficiency); 24th
(1895-1897) - Grover Cleveland; 25th (1897-1901) - William McKinley;
26th (1901-1909) - Theodore Roosevelt; 27th (1909-1913) - William Taft;
28th (191-1915) - Woodrow Wilson. The man who was postmaster for the
first two years of the 23rd President resigned to take up some business
in another town and Isaac was recommended to fill the vacancy.

father's sister Sarah Davis Reed and family lived nearby. The witnesses
to the marriage were John and Sophia Hooper, John Hooper (fireman) and
Leander Davis (engineer and brother of Ella) railroaded together. The
newlyweds took a wedding trip to Bonner Springs, Kansas, and then went
to Hardy to live in the home that awaited them there.
