Descendants of John Graves Holbert, Rev.

Generation No. 1

1. JOHN GRAVES3 HOLBERT , REV. (BENJAMIN2, JOHN HAUBERT/1) was born January 03, 1828 in Rutherford Co, NC (married twice), and died December 20, 1899 in [or 1894] Jasper, Pickens Co, GA1. He married (1) REBECCA KING Abt. 1850. (2) MADEN FOSTER May 29, 1854 in Henderson Co, NC.

Notes for JOHN GRAVES HOLBERT , REV.:

Notes from Nadine Christall (January 1998):

John Holbert was a well known Baptist Minister in the 1870 to 1890 era. He and his family are listed in the 1870 Polk Co. NC Census. The first documented evidence as to when John arrived in Pickens Co, GA, appears in the county marriage records. He officiated the marriage of Bailey W. Turner to Juleyan (Julia) Corbin on March 16, 1872. After John's death in 1891, the family, with the exception of Montreville and Isaac, moved back to North Carolina. John is buried at Burnt Mountain Baptist Chuch Cemetery.

Vernon Holbert writes (April 1998):

Four of Benjamin and Charity's children made their way to Cherokee/Pickens County Ga. beginning in 1850. Sophia came first. She married Steven Cowart - half brother to Hiram Dimsdale. Her brothers Benjamin and Jacob followed. Jacob married the daughter of Hiram Dimsdale here in Ga. I believe that John (my gg grandfather) may also have come here at that time; but, returned to NC when Rebecca died. He came to stay between 1870 & 72. That's a brief of how we came to be in Jasper, Georgia.

______________________________________

1860 POLK CO CENSUS: #131: JOHN HOLBERT 30 Farmer, Maiden 26, Montreville G. 8, Marcus 5, James 3, Isaac A, 2/12, Margaret M. Foster 18 (all born in NC except Maiden and Margaret Foster)

In 1860 census: JOHN HOLBERT (30), Maiden (26), Montreville (8), ____, Marcus (5), James (3) and Isaac A. 2.5. Daughter Louisa (7) seems to have been living with her grandparents since she is listed with Benjamin and Charity that year. However, this might be another Louisa Holbert of roughly the same age, since in 1870 Louisa is listed in both households.

1870 POLK CO: #166: JOHN HOLBERT 39 Minister; Maden 36, Montraville, Louisa, Marcus J, James E, Isaac A, John G., Rebecca, Mary H. This John and Benjamin were the only Holbert heads of household in the 1860 Polk County, NC, census.
