Thomas 'Tommie' Bastin, III

Thomas Bastin, Jr.'s son, also named Thomas, lived in Metcalfe County, KY. He served in the Federal Army during the Civil War, serving in the 21st Kentucky Volunteer Infantry. On September 2, 1864, just south of Jonesboro, GA, Tommie was severely injured when a cannon shell mangled his left arm. His left arm was amputated on September 3, 1864 in a field hospital, but he recovered from his injuries and lived for many more years. A more complete biography of him is available by clicking here. He is buried in Metcalfe County, KY just up a hill from where his parents are buried, almost within sight of the same cemetary. However, there is a county line located between the two cemetaries! (See Tommie's tombstone. )

Three of his sons served in the Federal Army, including William M. Bastin.

A map from 1895 shows Metcalfe County, KY was carved from eastern Barren County and Western Adair County.
(Contrast this with the map from 1834. )
