Playing Marbles

Presently, kids play video games, which supposedly fosters good eye-hand coordination. Long ago, a favorite past-time of boys everywhere was marbles. This game also required eye-hand coordination, as well as strategy, and was ideally suited for a pre-electric/pre-electronics era. Elaborate rules for playing marbles developed, and various types of marbles were preferred for certain shots. Depending on one's coordination, and experience, rather difficult shots could be made, and if you 'played for keeps', you managed to snag a few new marbles everytime you played! This photo, of brothers Holbert D. Bastin (left) and Clinton Bowen Bastin (right), shows them playing marbles circa 1900.

Holbert was born in about 1893, and Clinton was born in Lancaster, KY on 8 June 1890. They were both sons of Alfred Huffman 'Alford' Bastin and Alice 'Allie' Prudence (Ross) Bastin. Holbert died in Harrison County, KY on 19 October 1977, (near, or in, Cynthiana) at age 84, according to KY Vital Records. Clinton died on 13 January 1983.
