Dr. Harold E. Ragle and his wife, Etta, are shown in this snapshot. After retiring from the Navy, Dr. Ragle devoted much time and effort in tracing the BASTIN, BLACK, and RAGLE families. In addition to his grandmother, Mary (Bastin) Black, he was descended from several other early BASTIN ancestors, through several different descents, and the connections between all of his BASTIN ancestors are not known even to this day. He was a great great great great grandson of Thomas and Hannah (Brockman) Bastin of Caswell County, NC.
Dr. Ragle was one of the first, if not the first, to publish a BASTIN family history, and his work paved the way to allow easier tracing of numerous BASTIN family relationships. I never had the privilege of meeting him, although many long-time researchers on our BASTIN-L list both knew and worked with him in tracing our BASTIN heritage. (Photo courtesy of B. Krone. Thanks!)
