Please read my cars story below.
Above is a picture of my pride & joy!! Let me tell you alittle about her. A few years ago, well maybe a little more then a few, 1969 to be exact,I bought my first car. It was a 1966 Impala SS with a 396-325hp,4-speed,posi rear, guage pkg, tach, well you know all the good stuff!!! The exterior was Regal Red with a White interior. As years went by I had other toys, like an 80 Corvette,& a 68 Camaro and they all got sold. I told my wife ,Shirley, there is only one car i would really love to get. Yeah you guessed it, a 1966 Chevrolet Impala SS. I guess there's always a place in your heart for your first car!!!! Well let me tell you about the one I found. The VIN# is 16837J103548 & it was assembled the second week of Sept. 1965. The car was sitting out in the weather for sometime. The original transmission was in the trunk, and there was no engine at all!![bet it sure ran quiet !!] The body was removed from the frame in 1987,everything was stripped. Yes everything! The frame was sandblasted in 1988, & was totally rebuilt. If your planning to drive the car, you better have a dependable drivetrain. The Powerglide transmission, 3:36, 10 bolt rear, brakes, joints, bushings,& lines were either replaced or rebuilt. The engine, a 327cu.in. out of a 69 Impala, was also rebuilt. No expense was spared on the frame. The body, well that was fun too! The kid who owned the car wanted frenched doors. It looked like he took a ballpean hammer & tried it himself. Needless to say, the doorskins had to be replaced. Both doorskins came from a man in Texas. He had a small body shop and was to put them on for one of his customers. But the customer had to sell his car for some quick cash! [a divorce i'm told] Needless to say he got stuck with the doorskins. So he sold them at his cost! You don't run into deals like that everyday! The right quarterpanel was replaced, and the left one was patched. The floors and trunk were in decent shape. The car was primed and painted Marina Blue, the original color, and had 4 coats of clear put on it. The black interior was redone to original specs. An original AM-FM radio with an optional STEREO-MULTIPLEX was installed to replace the AM radio. You have to have a FM oldies station on to do some "crusin"! Right? An old school buddy, Kenny Hamm, helps me with some of the mechanical ends. To keep a project like this going it sure is nice to have some good friends to help you out!! A few cold beers help too !! As of now I have 15" Corvette rally wheels on the car with BF Goodrich radial tires. It sure rides alot nicer than the original bias ply tires it came with. I still have the original SS hubcaps. Maybe this year in Carlisle, I can buy four Uniroyals to match the one in the trunk!
The USA-1 plate on the front of the car is the one I had on my first 66 Impala SS back in 1969. My 66 is far from perfect! It will never be a numbers matching car, but I sure can drive it around.[as long as it's sunny out & no chance of rain! ha-ha]. I have a magnetic sticker I put on the radiator at car shows. It says, "If you see this car on a trailer CALL 911 because it's stolen!" You see, they didn't make trailers optional equipment in 1966.
That's one nice thing about living in Lebanon, Pa. We are 15 miles east of Hershey, headquarters for the Antique Automobile Club of America. It has a library and research center there. We also live 40 miles east of Carlisle. If you need a part for a car, you'll be sure to find one there at one of the part shows at Carlisle. I've won several trophies and awards with the car. The one I'm most proud of is the "Editor's Choice Award", and "Class Runner-Up" for "Super Chevy" magazine. It was at the"Super Chevy Show" at Maple Grove Raceway in Reading, Pa. in 1996. They took pictures of the "Winners", I'm the one in the middle, but as usual they spelled my name & city wrong in the magazine!! I get to hear alot of stories from people who tell me they had one like that years ago. The little folks at car shows always seem to say "Hey Dad, that trunk is as big as our living room!" That's another nice thing about my 66 Impala SS, there's always room to put your tables, chairs, & food in when you go away. It sure is fun to drive 3700 lbs. of Detroit's finest around. I guess my car will never be finished because you can always find another part or option to add to it! That's why my 66 Impala SS will never be sold! They'll have to pry my cold, dead, stiff fingers from around the steering wheel first! I'm looking for an engine to make this a numbers matching car.If you, or anyone you know might have a 327 out of a 66 Impala, please leave me know. The only problem is that it needs to be a Flint motor. The numbers would be between F0622HC and F0903HC. You can e-mail me from this page, or sign my Guestbook, which I hope you do anyway, to leave me know! Don't forget to leave your e-mail & URL address. Thanks for your help!!
Well..guess what folks. I finally found a numbers matching engine for my "66". It wasn't too far from where I live believe it or not. The code number is F0821HC. Can't believe I finally got one! It was a complete engine from carb, to oil pan. That alone is rare to find, yet a number matching one is even more unbelievable! Guess everyone has to get lucky everyonce in a while. Hopefully in a year or so, I will have it in the car. I want to rebuild it, get a Stainless exhaust system, and a new gas tank yet!
Here is a picture of a wooden craft a friend made for my "66"
As you see, I have added buttons on the left side of page for information and pictures for other Impala's from 1958 thru 1969! If I do not get your pictures on right away, or see as many updates, please forgive me! As of July 1, 2004 I was diagnosed with primary liver cancer. I am going through chemotheropy right now and have another one to go yet. Then we'll have another CT-Scan and see if it is helping!!! Thank you for understanding me with my health problem. Well it's September 14, 2004 now and have learned that the chemotheropy is not helping alot. Seems like the large tumor has grown, and now have even more small ones in my liver. In October, I plan to get some experimental treatments to hopefully slow them down or kill the damn things for once. Time seems to be running out but miracles do happen. Please don't stop praying! On October 20,2004 I had a chemo-embolization done on my liver. It was a rough couple of weeks, but I'm slowly getting better as the weeks go by. It looks like the large tumor is dying, but some small ones are still growing. I am still going through chemo treatments. My cancer count is down which will really slow down the growing process of the tumors down. Thank you for your prayers and well wishes I received from all of you!!! See..........PRAYERS DO WORK !! I plan on being here for a while yet to keep bringing you more Impala pictures and stories!!......So bring em on people!! Thanks and God Bless You All! Tom Myers
Well it is May 9, 2006 now and I guess you should have an update on my condition. It has gotten worse and i will not be getting any more treatments. My liver has 8 tumors in it, brain has 4 tumors, and now my omentum has masticized with cancer. I will try to keep this page updated as much as i can. If and when something happens to me I will try to get a friend of mine to keep it up and running! Through all these years it is people like you that keep me going. This site has been fun for me to do. Whatever you do in life, PLEASE tell someone you love them EVERYDAY! Give them a hug or just say thank you for being a friend. There are over 290,000 hits on this page and each one of them are special to me! May God Bless each and every one of you and may he also bless this country, The United States of America! Our country needs to be blessed by him too!!!!!!!!!! Again, Thank you for your visits and GOD BLESS! Tom Myers
