Alaska...The Last Frontier
Alaska is so very beautiful,
with so many things to do and places to go.
From the highest peaks of Mt.McKinley to
the miles of coastline that seem to go on forever.
The large, busy cities to the small, remote villages.
Everywhere you turn there are thickly wooded areas teaming with wildlife of all type.
The Aurora Borealis (more commonly known as the northern lights) dancing accross the sky.
And the free, majestic eagles that soar overhead.
Anchorage, Alaska is where we now make our home. Anchorage has just about every organized sport you could possibly want.
We have everything from basketball, baseball and softball to broomball, football and rugby to soccer, hockey and volleyball. There are many miles of trails for walking, hiking and biking.
There is also many parks, recreation/community centers and places for children as well as adults to have fun and enjoy themselves.
The Iditarod Dog Sled Race runs from Anchorage to Nome, Alaska every year... approximately 1,150 miles through snow, wooded areas and over frozen tundra.
The first race began March 3, 1935 and was won by Dick Wilmarth.
The race starts the 1st Saturday of March every year.
It is the longest race in the world.
Fur Rendezvous (called Fur Rondy by the locals) is held every spring.
Fur Rondy started in 1935 when the men and women of the villages came to the city to trade the furs that they trapped during the long winter months for things they may need.
We still celebrate it as the beginning of the end of dark days, cold nights and cabin fever with a carnival, dog sled races, food tasting, and sight-seeing among many other activities.
Yes, in the summer, we have long days where the sun seems to never fully set.
But, that just gives you plenty of time to do everything.
During the winter it does get quite dark, even during the "day".
Hope you did everything that you wanted during the summer because there just doesn't seem to be enough daylight to do things in the winter.
There are still plenty to do during the winter. Just not a lot of daylight.
Now, the wildlife does take some getting used to.
You just have to realize that they are here and take precautions.
When was the last time that you had a moose stick her head in your kitchen window...
or a bear come to your campsite?
Or, had to remain someplace longer than you would like, but are unable to leave because of the 2 bull moose fighting over territory?
Last summer there was even a picture in the newspaper showing a cow moose cooling off in a child's small swimming pool.
Of course there are conflicting opinions about whether or not the wildlife should be contained and kept from walking the streets of the city... if that would even possible.
But, I'd have to say that, the wildlife roaming free was one of the many things that attracted me to the area.
