Tips for Looking good!

Well, for starters, PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!! Practice makes Perfect! If you practice, the better & better you get. One tip is DO NOT just skip along & learn the parts you don't know, do the WHOLE cheer or dance & that way you learn it more consistantly! Like, my squad is learning the dance from Alliyah, "Are you that Somebody" and we have gone over it a million times! But, we're gonna look really good when we're out there!

Organization is a KEY to success! If your squad is not organized, there is going to be problems. Choose a Captain and Co-Captain & they should have the organizing responsibility. When choosing Captains, just don't choose them because they're pretty or they do the cheers well. You want someone with a little bit of both, organization & coordination!

Have your Coach ALWAYS partcipating & hinting, even when someone else from the squad is trying to teach a dance. Always ask opinions, after all, the crowd is who you should please!

Tricks for Looking good!

When you first start cheering, try to get the squad's respect. If they don't respect you, they won't listen. When organizing or teaching a dance or routine, always take it step-by-step for the others that don't quite catch on quickly.

"I am a great believer in giving young people responsibility, because with a little guidance it is remarkable how they rise to it. Leading a crowd and being an official team or school representative is a big responsibility, and that's what game cheering is. It does help if a squad has both junior and senior sections. The more experienced seniors can help and encourage the juniors, acting as captains, which makes them think more about what they are doing - and why - and what is expected of them. Having to lead roles of conduct by example in taking charge of a younger section (under supervision) can be a very maturing and constructive experience. For many this will be their first taste of basic 'coaching' skills, which hopefully will create better appreciation of cheerleader/coach relationships. Not everyone can handle being front centre on stage with a live audience, but that's what makes Cheerleaders so special !
