He married TABITHA MATTHEWS February 10, 1821 in Halifax County NC. She was born September 21, 1802 in Hallifax County NC, and died April 26, 1888 in Fayette County GA.
Notes for MATTHEW GILBERT:
The Gilbert family left North Carolina in 1822 (shortly after Tabitha's marriage to Matthew) and migrated to Georgia on a wagon pulled by Oxen, settling in Henry County GA. The family soon spread to Fayette, Clayton, and surrounding counties.
Tabitha Matthews Gilbert was a pioneer wife who raised ten children, all of whom lived past their sixtieth Birthdays. Her Granddaughter, Talula Gilbert Bottoms, wrote of her, "She was a very small woman and pretty with fair complexion, black eyes and auburn hair...She told me of her courtships and her marriage to my grandfather and that...she loved a young school master." When the older Matthew Gilbert came calling she would run and hide on top of the loom in the loom room until he went away, though he kept coming until "I guess she married him to get rid of him," Talula wrote.
The couple settled on 202 1/2 acres of land on Little Cotton Indian creek in Henry County, still a wilderness full of wild animals and Indians. When Tabitha had to go to the spring for water, she would "set the Table leg" on her small son's dress so he would not wander. Or she would lift up a plank in the floor of the log cabin and put him in the "Cellar". Her caution was understandable since she had once put him on a quilt under the trees and returned to find several Indians standing around his pallet chattering excitedly.
During the Civil War, Tabitha refused to refugee with any of the Gilbert family and elected to stay at the Marshbourne home of her daughter and son-in law during the Yankee occupation to prevent the soldiers from completely destroying her home and from carrying off her valuables. Bands of "Bummers", stragglers from Shermans army, had made their way to the rear and proceeded to pilfer valuables, food and livestock, and harass the local citizenry. The Marshbourne and John Gilbert Homes would be no exceptions. Tabitha could not even prevent Confederate foragers from taking one of Sam Marshbourne's heavy confederate uniform coats.

Notes for WILLIAM GILBERT:
William Gilbert was a farmer and Merchant in Conyers, Georgia. He served as a Private, Second Georgia Reserve, Confederate States Army, from Sep 1863- Mar 1864. He Refugeed to Augusta Georgia where he made shoes for confederate soldiers. He lived in Sotckbridge Georgia during his last years.
William Gilbert was an Energetic and ambitious young man, He married into a prosperous family and established himself as a successful merchant before the Civil War. William, However, lost more than any other member of his family during the war. WHen he came home from Augusta near the close of the war he found his store burned to the ground and his home furnishings destroed. This loss added to his lingering poverty after the War kept William from ever again enjoying the comforts of life that he had know before the War.
William Gilbert was the only family member of his family to have been affiliated with the Presbyterian Church. And the story on this storey is now obscure. Williams wife was a devout Methodist. It is known that there was a strong group of Presbyterians living south of Conyers, Georgia, when William had his store there, and he may have joined them when they built the old Smyrna Presbyterian Church and Campground.
Child of WILLIAM GILBERT is:
i. JAMES3 GILBERT, d. 1840.

Notes for JOHN JOSEPH GILBERT:
John J. Gilbert moved to Fayetteville from Henry County when he first married and lived in Fayetteville the rest of his life. He was a farmer and a Mail Carrier, and a member of the Methodist Church.
During the Civil War, He was elected 1st LT. of the 496th District of Fayette County Georgia Militia, from which he resigned due to critical civilian occupation as a mail Carrier. He continued to deliver the Mail between McDonough and Fayetteville during the Union Calvary forays in the area. He, along with his entrusted servant, Isham, was captured in the summer of 1864 on a trip to South Fayetteville. He and Isham both escaped while being led back to enemy lines by making a daring break-away ride through the wooded contryside, relying on their knowledge of the terrain, and raced home unharmed.
John Gilbert's responsiblities were legion during the Civil War years. His Civil War record book shows he bought Raw hides of almost every concieveable animal, including dogs, had them tanned "on Shares", and had a faithful slave make dozens of pairs of shoes for men women and children.
John Gilbert lived in Fayette County nearly nine years before the other members of his family began their migration. He was noted for having a good mind and was an exceptional business man. Known as a peacemaker, he was called on so often to settle disputes people often called him Judge Gilbert.
He became a prosperous planter and probably bought and sold more land in the nineteenth century than any other man in Fayette County.--including many acres of land between Fayetteville and Jonesboro. It was on the road between these two towns that he built his comfortable Greek Revival style home and raised his family. There was a one room schoolhouse on the property that John built not only for his two children, but for his neighbors kids as well. The Gilbert farm was equipped with 5 slaves, one of whom was a trusted house servant. Two others, Isham and Net, would refuse to leave the farm after the war.
Since his two older brothers did not move to Fayette County, John was considered the Head of Household, serving as administrator for most of his two sisters after the death of their husbands. He also did much to see that his mother was comfortable in her latter years. He was a man of strong Character and was noted for being generous to those he loved.
John Gilbert died on the same day as his younger brother, Dock Gilbert. They were both buried a short distance from each other on the same afternoon in 1906.
John was the father of 9 children 5 by the 1st wife and 4 by the second wife.

He is believed to be buried in the confederate cemetery in Harrisburg VA. but the gravesite has not been found.
It is reported that all the members of his company young and old, greatly lamented his death of their trusted veteran commander for whom they had followed and fought for, served for over two and a half years.
Susannah lived the remainder of her life in Fayetteville GA except for a brief period when she lived with her mother-in-law in Castelia NC during the Civil War.

She was married three different times and yet the total of her married life was less than seven years. A crumbling stone chimney and the rusted wheels of a wagon bed remain in a tangle of undergrowth to mark the spot today.
"Nannie" was pregnant with her son Johnnie May when her husband was killed. After her second home burned about 1900 she moved to Fayetteville, though she still ran her farm and managed to still send her four children to college.
In 1924, carrying in her heart the loneliness and despair of the loss of her husband and two sons, and death of her nephew George in WWI, she took her own life at her home in Fayetteville GA.

George had a deformed foot, but in spite of that he was drafted into the service for WWI. His fine horsemanship placed him in training with a calvary platoon at Camp Wheeler GA. where he was assigned to help officers mount, to groom their horses, and to repair bridles and saddles.
His parents were stunned when they recieved a telegram telling them of George's death Jan 20 1918, an early casualty of the Meningitis Epidemic.
If he had not been drafted into service George would have graduated from the Architectural school in Athens GA in 1918.
Talula had sent a hand made quilt to her son at the Army base. George was covered with that quilt when he was taken by ambulace to an Atlanta Hospital. It was left there to be sterilized after his death and thought lost but was later recovered and sent to his mother.
