Notes for SQUIRE BOONE, SR.:

Tanner and Weaver By trade

He was dismissed from the Quaker Church in 1748 because he tolerated the marriage of two of his children marrying out of the church membership.

Probably onw of the reasons he moved May 1 1750 to Holman Fork on the Yadkin River Rowan County NC. The Statement that they stopped in Virginia for about two years seems to be in error as he made entry of land in NC in 1750

He is described as a strong wiry man of rather small stature, ruddy complextion, red hair and Green eyes.

They are both buried in the Joppa Cemtary at Mocksville, Davie County NC where their gravestones were standing until recently because of depredation of Souvenier-hunters, the stones have benn enclosed in a strong steel cage as protection from vandalism. They had eleven children, the first 3 or 4 were born in New Britain township, Bucks County the rest were born in Berks County PA.

Notes for DANIEL BOONE:

Daniel Boone (1734-1820)

American pioneer. Born in Pennsylvania, he left home at an early age and became a hunter in North Carolina and later served in the French and Indian War. In 1767 he led a group of settlers along the Wilderness Road through the Cumberland Gap into Kentucky. After several years of exploration there, he guided another group of settlers into Kentucky in 1775 to found a colony for the Transylvania Company. The settlement was named Boonesboro. During the Revolutionary War, Boone was taken prisoner by the Shawnees, but he was adopted by the tribe and set free. After the war, he was appointed to several public offices in Kentucky but lost all his land holdings, due to a failure to register them properly. Late in his life he moved to Missouri, where he received a small land grant from Congress.

Boonesboro- A former fort in Central Kentucky, Southeast of Lexington, on the Kentucky River. Settled by frontiersman Daniel Boone in 1775, it was the end of a branch of the Wilderness Road.

Notes for JESSE HARBIN:

The old German personal name (Haribert or Herebert) was the parent of this name-Harbin. The meaning is "army-bright."

St. Haribert, Archbishop of Cologne around 1000 AD made the name popular among the French nobility. The name was shortened to Herbert and then to Harb and Herb. To these shortened forms, the French added their diminutive suffixes -en, -et, -ette, -in etc to give the meaning "little Herb' and "son of Harb" or "son of Harb."

Indications are that these names were introduced into England by the Normans who had adopted many of the French forms of the name, such as Harbin, Herbin, Harbert, Harbelot, Herbelen, and Herblot.

Burkes General Armory lists the arms granted to Robert Harbin, Esquire of Newton, Somerershire, in 1618.

Three families of the name Harbin were living in the Piedmont area of North Carolina in 1790.

The following was submitted by Sharon.

Taken from an original news release to newspapers from March 1930 regarding the story of the killing of Captain Callaway for new article "This Week in Missouri History", compiled by the Historical Society, Floyd C Shoemaker, secretary.

"INDIANS KILL CAPTAIN CALLAWAY"

Captain James Callaway, the man for whom Callaway County was named when it was organized November 25, 1820, met his death at the hands of Indians near the confluence of Prairie Fork and Loutre Creek, Montgomery County, 115 years ago the seventh of this month. Captain Callaway, son of Flanders and Jemima Boone Callaway, and grandson of Daniel Boone, lived in St Charles district, where in 1805 he married Nancy Howell. Of ordinary education, but good natural talents, he interested himself in public affairs, serving as deputy sheriff, tax collector, cavalry cornet, administrator, and in other local and military positions. As early as 1810, it is said, he was captain of a cavalry company in the militia. At any rate, the War of 1812 found him on the frontier fighting Indians, and the fatal March 7, 1815, found him stationed at Fort Clemson, on Loutre Creek, whence he set out on his last expedition.

Assisted by Lieutenant Jonathan Riggs, Captain Callaway took a party of some fifteen men to search for a band of Indians who had stolen some horses from neighboring settlers. After swimming Loutre slough, they came upon their camp about twelve miles above Prairie Fork. There were the horses, guarded only by squaws. The animals were recovered without resistance, but Lt Riggs, it is recorded, expressed suspician of an ambuscade if they returned to the fort by the same route they came. Captain Callaway insisted, however, so they started back.

As they approached Prairie Fork again, Lt Riggs renewed his warning to his superior officer, but the latter was determined to go on. Some accounts say that Captain Callaway lost his temper and called his Lt a coward. At any rate, they pushed forward and were attacked just as they were crossing Prairie Fork. The stream was high at that time, and the Indians, hidden along the bank, fired on thre first three horsemen just after they plunged into the water. Captain Callaway rushed forward and was nearly across the creek when he was shot at. His horse was killed and he was wounded in his left arm, escaping immediate death when a ball lodged against his watch, which was shattered. Springing to the bank, Captain Callaway cast his rifle, which he did not have time to reload, into the creek, muzzle first, and started running down the edge of the stream.

After a short distance, he plunged into the creek, but as he swam a shot struck him in the back of the head, and he sank from sight. Lt Riggs and the remaining men were hotly engaged, but fighting as they retreated, they escaped without loss of life, although several were wounded. The three in advance, who Captain Callaway rushed forward to help, however, had been killed. Four or five of the whites, in all, lost their lives in the fight. It is not known how many casualties the Indians suffered. A burying party, returning the next day, found the bodies of three of the rangers mutilated by the Indians, according to the more detailed accounts. Captain Callaway's body, when found several days after the fight, was untouched, it having been in the stream and concealed. His father, Flanders Callaway, had arrived from St Charles County in time to attend the recovery of the corpse. Captain Callaway's widow, who had endured all the hardships of the frontier wife and mother but this one, was attending school near her home in St Charles County when she heard of her husband's death. It is probable that she was trying to remove that handicap, which she later did. On arrival of the bad news, she left without a word and stoically walked home, but fainted as she reached her house.

Notes for COL ALBERT GALLATIN BOONE, COL:

This was published in the "Early Far West Notebook- Vol X" and interview with Mary Ann Randall Boone (Van Daniel's wife) at Walsenburg, Colorado on Dec 7, 1907:

Col Boone first came to the Rocky Mountains in the year 1824. col Boone died at B D Spencer's residence, 843 California Street, Denver, Colorado, after an illness of ten months, died at 11 o'clock, evening.

A G Boone had a store in Westport (never in Independence; but had one or two branch stores for Indian trade in Kansas, one among Pottawatomie Indians and one among Sacs and Foxes (on the reservations) and one among Osages, she thinks.

A G Boone's early trip to Rocky Mountain was with Jim Bridger and others. Col A G Boone bought the 2 1/2 story white house of Alex Majors in 1862 spring. In fall of 1865, Van Boone went back and spent winter in Kansas and returned in spring. That spring, Col Boone bought two adjoining claims at Boone, Colorado, from Majors, and he lived in the frame and Van B in the log, and they homesteaded those two claims.

Previous to spring of 1862, Col A G had been Indian Agent for Cheyenne and Arapahoes at Ft Lyon. The Col's business and big store were already well established in Westport where Mrs Van Boone (then Miss Randall) and her father came to Missouri from Kentucky. James Hamilton had ( for a year or two before Col Boone came west to Colorado) been a partner of Col Boone. He, Hamilton, did not come west, but died in Westport after the partnership was dissolved. Scrapbook of Mrs Conrad Unfug, of Westport, Colorado, "Col A G Boone is now a resident of Ft Lincoln, Dakota. He is enjoying good health, and is now in his seventy-fourth year".

A G's grandson, Otis B Spencer (also interviewed in 1903): Col A G Boone came west to Rocky Mountains first in 1826 with a party representing on of St Louis Fur Companies (Gen Ashley) to trade with the Indians. He names, on that expedition Cache la Poudre river from the circumstance of the party hiding powder under the bank of that stream as a temporary deposit while making short excursions of trade. On that expedition, the party visited Brown's hole."

Albert Gallatin Boone, (grandson to Daniel) was mentioned in James Michner's "Centennial". He was an Indian Agent and good friends with Kit Carson.

126. VAN DANIEL10 BOONE (JESSE BRYAN9, DANIEL8, SARAH7 MORGAN, EDWARD6, JAMES5, EDWARD4, WILLIAM3, JOHN2, THOMAS1) was born April 29, 1814 in Greenup Co, Missouri, and died March 04, 1871 in Pueblo, Colorado. He married MARY ANN RANDALL January 09, 1845 in Independence, Missouri, daughter of RICHARD RANDALL. She was born March 07, 1823, and died September 18, 1909 in Missouri.

Notes for VAN DANIEL BOONE:

Originally buried in the old North cemetery (Masonic area). Records are poor from this cemetery. One source states that Van and Mary Ann were moved to Roselawn in Pueblo.

The following excerpts are from a typewritten document, "History of Pueblo" by Mrs Stoddard (c 1948, located in Pueblo County Library, Pueblo, Colorado). It contains the history of Boone, Colorado.

"This vast worthless area, rising from the north bank of the river to the mountains in the Pike's Peak area, broken by four creeds between the east line of Pueblo County and a point less than halfway between the present two villages, North Avondale and Boone, became a well settled and prosperous section of the County. The creeks known today by the names of men who years ago made homes on the banks are lasting monuments to their integrity. Col Albert G and brother Van Daniel Boone, James H Haynes, Ludwig Cramer and Bob Graham with the other settlers between, composed an early farming settlement, across the Arkansas River from an earlier one of French, Indians, and Mexicans, hunters, trappers and scouts, named "The Charlie Autobee Colony."

The old Booneville (or Barnum) Stage Coach Station on Boone Creek and the one on Bob Creek called Spring Bottom Station, mark the trails to two river crossings. Booneville and Nepesta, long before railroads had gotton this far west. In this country where irrigation relieves much of the "Desert" condition these pioneers improved the small ditches along rivers and creeks, the Mexican inhabitants had previously used in a primitive way. Col Fosdick had surveyed a large ditch on his ranch, South and East of the present Village of Boone. His near neighbors along the North bank of the Arkansas River also had their private irrigation ditches, but they soon saw a better way would be to havae one large ditch, then use that water taken out at the one larger headgate on the River alternate hours. So uniting their individual water share they incorporated their ditch as the Arkansas Valley Irrigation Ditch and Milling Company of Booneville. This was on July 22, 1861. The Incorporators were H M Fosdick, B F Kidwell, Jim Mock, John ross, Ludwig Kramer, Corbett, Bagsbey, and E E Tuttle...Ross and Bidwell built the Ditch, on line surveyed by Fosdick.....In 1860 , Van Daniel Boone and his brother Col Albert Gallatin Boone, prominent Ky gentlemen came to Denver, Colorado. For a few years previous to 1859, Col Boone had been the Indian Agent at the New Fort Bent.... The Col remained in Denver for a time, Daniel came to the Arkansas Valley and located on land about 18 miles east of Pueblo. Early in the year of 62, Col Boone opened the first "General Store" in town of Pueblo located just west of the present P O building, near place where Baxter built the 'Grist Mill' and constructed the 'Old Mill Ditch' for water wheel power and for some irrigation water....Dr W S Catterson was manager of Col Boone's store,,,W S Catterson was Postmaster of the first P O in Pueblo, established December 13, 1860, at that time Pueblo was in Arapahoe County, Kansas. Col Boone had acquired land near his brother and made his home there. In July of 1861, he received appointment of Post Master of Booneville, this settlement was known for 30 years as Booneville, even though the Santa Fe Railroad called their Station, Boone (in 1876), and in 1887 the Mountain Pacific Railroad was built through here had named their station 'Fosdick' in honor of a prominent army man who had become a rancher here in his early days. After years of more or less confusion as to names, in 1891, the P O and Mountain Pacific Railroad took the name of Boone."

Notes for ALONZO BOONE:

info submitted by Doelady@thewantads.com Mar 3, 1997

Died at the home of his eldest son, Charley Edgar Boone. He was buried in a coffin made by Charley's son-in-law, Fred Hill and Fred's father, Charles Henry Hill. He was buried in a small cemetery in Cherokee City, Arkansas.

Alonzo was a veteran of the Black Hawk War, was a private in Captain Nathaniel Boone's Company of Mounted Rangers. He enlisted in St Charles County, Missouri on August 4, 1832 for one year and was honorably discharged on August 4, 1833 ar Fort Gibson, Illinois.

He was five foot, five inches tall, complexion light, hair auburn. His occupation was shoe making, though in later years he peddled books and patent medicines. He was fond of hunting and fishing and on one occasion while recuperating a long siege of fever and still weak, he ventured a little way from the house into the woods with his gun. While walking down a path, he met a bear, he knew it was death for one or the other. Of course the bear raised upon it's hind feet, he took aim at the bear's heart and fired; the bear dropped down on all fours and made for him. Alonzo turned and ran a little way and fell down from weakness on a bank and rolled down. The bear fell dead on the bank where Alonzo first fell.

That he once lived in Jackson County, Louisiana is shown in his army papers by his claim for bounty land made through the agency of I W Jenkins of Maqueketa, Iowa on November 16, 1850. In a letter in Garland Boone's army papers is one written to Mr Fant by Alonzo that said he left some papers concerning his bounty land grant with Jonas Clark to lay away for him before leavng Iowa for Missouri in the fall of 1851. His land warrant number 12071 was issued July 15, 1851 and was for forty acres in Montgomery County, Missouri, not far from Bluffton, Missouri. Later Alonzo bought the old place where his father (John Boone) settled in Callaway County on Bull Branch close to Prairie Fork Creek, and lived several years, selling the place to Robert Tate, and moved to Lynn County, Missouri, where his wife, Martha Jane, died and was buried.

He, with the children, soon after that moved to Callaway County, Missouri. The minutes of Mt Horeb Church said Alonzo joined the church by experience in 1839. In 1842, he and some others moved their church membership to a church in the Missouri bottoms, but returned in a few years to Mt Horeb again. He may have moved his letter at other times, but it its not stated in the minutes until 1875 while he was living with his son, Charley Jackson, in Cherokee City, Arkansas. He served Mt Horeb Church as Deacon, Clerk, and as janitor at different times.

Children of ALONZO BOONE and MARY JACKSON are:

i. MARY CLARISSA11 BOONE, b. November 27, 1834; d. September 06, 1839.

ii. CHARLEY EDGAR BOONE, b. July 15, 1837; d. October 01, 1912; m. ANNIE WOODSON ANDERSON.

Notes for CHARLEY EDGAR BOONE:

Charley was adopted by his Grandfather, Richard B Jackson, upon the death of his mother, Mary Jane when he was 2 years old. He was known as Charley Jackson. He lived on his farm from one and one-half miles south of Williamsburg in Callaway County, Missouri, where he raised his family; he owned and operated a sawmill and a grist mill; he held the office of Constable for many years; also he was a tax collector; he was elected Justice of the Peace in later years.

Timber having become scarce in Missouri, he moved his mill, household goods, livestock, and family to Cherokee City, Arkansas in 1894, and lived in that state until 1910. He and his wife moved to El Monte, California, where his daughter and eldest son had previously moved. He was a man of good breeding, of medium size, red curly hair and blue eyes. He was a Mason and a Civil War Veteran. He died October 1, 1912, and is buried in the El Monte Cemetery in California.

Articles in Fulton Sun Gazette, Fulton, Callaway County, Missouri.

R B BOONE, WHO WORKED HARDER THAN ANY MAN SHOULD, REACHED AGE 99

R B "Bud" Boone, who says he has "worked harder than any man should" has no desire to live his life over if he should have to go through the same thing again.

He celebrated his 99th birthday anniversary yesterday, although the formal observance, a family dinner party, was held Sunday at his home on Route 1 (Toledo Rd).

For more than 20 years, Boone was a steam threshing machine operator doing custom work and also his own threshing, and put long hours in the hot sun during the harvest season each year.

"I was the first man to swing an ax to clear the right of way for the Katy (Missouri-Kansas and Texas) Railroad in the Portland (Callaway County, Missouri) area" he recalls, "I always worked hard and long hours."

Boone says he hasn't worked much during the past 35 years. By this he means that he just tended his own farm work. Today he has only ten acres of land, but still keeps active, feeding and caring for hogs and occasionally doing garden work.

"I'm going to have to give it up though," he said somewhat sadly. " My eyesight is getting poorer and I have trouble seeing what I am doing." He uses a hand tractor in the garden to cultivate, "if the plants are big enough for me to see."

"I haven't had a chew of tobacco for 65 years, I smoked a few cigars after that but never cared much for then. There was a time when I'd take a drink of hard liquor, but I never smell the stuff now."

His formula for a long life: "Live a straight life, treat everybody just like you want to be treated." Boone says he was never arrested, never in jail. But he added with a grin," I've had a fight or two. Won them all but one- and that was the only time I was knocked down."

Not a large man, Boone said his best weight in his prime was about 150 pounds. He stands five feet, ten inches and weighs about 140 pounds today. He has weighed as much as 170 pounds.

A life long resident of Callaway County, he was born near the Montgomery County line on October 23, 1862, to Alonzo and Martha Boone. His father lived to within 15 days of his 88th birthday.

He was first married to the former Lucy Tate, and ten children were born to the couplem six of whom are still living . Lucy died in 1919, and on October 31, 1920, he married the former Mrs Eva Garrett Wyatt and they will observe their 41st anniversery this year.

His children are David Boone, St Louis; Gaily Boone, Norfolk, Va; Leo Boone, Fulton; John Boone, Kansas City; Mrs Whit Bruce, New Franklin. One son, Mann, died of battle injuries during WWI and another son and two daughters died in infancy.

He also has one step-daughter, Mrs Virginia Veach, Fulton; another step-daughter, Mrs Lois Shively, is deceased.

There are 9 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

xv. ARTHUR TUCKER BOONE, b. January 16, 1866; d. March 31, 1956; m. ANNA BELLE PENN, March 25, 1891.

Notes for ARTHUR TUCKER BOONE:

Arthur resembled the original Boone family more than his brothers and sisters. He was a fairly tall man, thin and wore a mustache in his younger days. They started housekeeping on a farm known as the Marlow Place, located 5 miles southwest of Mineola, Callaway County, Missouri, near where the Prairie Fork empties into Big Loutre River. Later they moved to a farm known as the Barnes Plade near High Point Church, and near Shamrock, Missouri.

All of the children were grown by then and left home except Herman, who remained with his parents until the time of their death. In later years "Tuck" Boone and his wife moved to Genesee place about 8 miles west of Montgomery City, Missouri. He retired from farming and moved to Fulton.

He was a hardworking farmer all his life. He loved to hunt and fish, raised and hunted fox hounds, also raised and trained gaited saddle horses and had one "blue ribbon" mare at the Montgomery County Fair.

He always observed the Sabbath Day and was well liked and respected by all who knew him. Both he and his wife are buried in Oak Grove Christian Cemetery.

Notes for ANNIE ELIZA BOONE:

She was 93 years, 7 months, 11 days old when she died. She was born in Callaway County, Missouri. In 1887 she was married to Matthias Gargus, in Chamois, Missouri on November 6th. ( A lot of people went to Chamois to be married. It was across the river and there was a ferry across the river from Portland to Chamois. It was the closest large town to that area.)

She moved to the Sullivan area as a young woman and has lived there until her death. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church for 45 years and served the church well until illness prevented her from being there. Mr Gargus preceded her death in 1903. She had 41 grandchildren, 76 greatchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren.

Internment was in the 100f Memorial Cemetery.
