Vern started working on the farm at a very young age.
He really enjoyed the farm life and everything about it as he loved the outdoors.
He enjoyed working in the fields and also in the barn milking the cows.
That is what he
was doing when I met him as he would see me driving by from our summer camp on the St. Lawrence river.
He would listened to the Grand Ole Opry every
morning on the radio while milking the cows. His
favorite singer at the time was Eddie Arnold along with
a lot of the old
time country singers which have been slowly
disappearing. Afterwards, he found other good country
singers, like Randy Travis and Tanya Tucker who turned out to be his favorites.
He would play softball for relaxation. He was a pitcher
for a local team. They would play every summer on the weekends. Then came the Korean war and he was drafted in the army. That was just 8 months after we were married.
When he returned from the service he decided to do
construction work and run heavy equipment.
He enjoyed working outdoors and working
with dirt. He helped build a lot of interstate 81 in
New York. He also did a lot of other types of land
clearing and loading trucks.
The dozer and front-end loader were 2 of his
favorites to run. He was in this line of work for
over 25 years and then he had to take a medical
retirement. He loved this type of work and it was
hard for him to give it up but he had no
choice.
To occupy his time. he took up gardening and
woodworking. He enjoyed growing his own
vegetables
and had more fun eating them as he
loved to cook. He had a workshop in the shed and cut
out animal figures, birdhouses
and other
things. The one thing he really enjoyed was the
Braves baseball
team. We would watch
them everytime they were on, even when they were in
the cellar. He had a lot of favorite players like
Rafael Belliard
He really
enjoyed him and called him (Pac Man).He is now
retired from the game. Another player that he liked
was Chipper Jones
He thought he would be a great third baseman and he
did turn out to be great. He liked most of the main
pitchers but another favorite was Greg Maddux
He said he was so precise in his
pitching and he was really happy that the braves had
signed him. The braves general manager made a lot of
good decisions with most of the players that he
acquired. I still watch them everytime they are
on.
