Getting to Know People Games
Here are some games which are useful for ice breakers or if you a have a lot of new recruits!
If I were an Animal...
Guides stand in a circle, the first person says 'My name is _________ and if I were an animal I'd be a ________ because'. You can start them off with an example such as "I'd be a bee, because I'm always busy", or "I'd be a puma because I can run fast". The next person then introduces themselves and ALSO repeats what the previous person said. The last person in the circle has the difficult task of repeating all the names!
There are endless variations on this theme - for example, favourite things, but try to choose something which will make other people remember their name and a little bit about them
Movements
This is a variation on the above game. The person who starts things off says there name followed by a movement which they choose to represent them (you could jump in the air, pull a face, the bigger the better). All the other Guides say their name and make the movement the person chose.
Find Someone Who...
Before the meeting prepare a list of 'people' to find. For example 'find someone who has an older brother, find someone whose Birthday is in June, find someone who has climbed a mountain'. Give each Guide a Copy. The Guides then have to go and find people who fill the criteria and ask them to sign their sheet.
Detective
This is another variation on 'Find someone who...'. Hand out sheets for each Guide which have a list of statements on, such as 'My middle name is________', 'When I grow up I want to be______', My favourite animal is '__________'. Ask the Guides to fill these in ANONYMOUSLY in a quiet corner of the room. Then collect all the sheets in and jumble them up. These are then handed out to Guides (make sure no one gets their own sheet back). The Guides then have to 'find' the person whose information they have by 'playing detective. They go around the room asking each Guide they meet a question until they find the person they have the clues for.
Find Your Twin
The Guider calls out instructions such as 'find someone else with the same colour eyes as you', 'find someone else who has been a rainbow', 'find someone else who has the same colour hair as you'. The Guides then get into groups with people who have things in common with them.
Name Catch
The Guides stand in a circle. One guide is given a ball. She has to throw it to another Guide in the circle and say here name at the same time. The person who catches the ball then does the same and so on.
This is my friend....
Put the Guides into pairs with people they don't know. Give them 1minute each to talk about each themselves to the other person. They might talk about how many brothers and sisters they have, where they go to school, their hobies etc., When time is up each Guide has to introduce their part
r to the rest of the group.
Surprise Penny (this game was submitted to the Guiding Mailing list by Soraya Cote, I thought it sounded great!)
Two or three person are secretly given a few pennies, which they conceal in their hand, with instructions to secretly pass the penny while shaking hands. They are to pass it to the tenth person they shake hands with. The group is then told to go around in a circle shake hands with the person accross from them, to introduce themselves, stating their names, where they were from (or anything else which may be relevant), then told them to watch out for big surprises! If they were the ones receiving the surprise, they
were to state something about their personality, ie: I am a good listener, etc. Then the general audience is told that they are to pass this Surprise to the 10th person they would shake hands with, and so on.
