Bonfire in Jamie's words..a mail home
>

Jamie's mom, Neva Hand, wanted to send this message to all who knew Jamie,
and to those of us who didn't know her.

Neva says "Our lives have been forever changed by the tragedy of the Bonfire collapse. Jamie Lynn, the third of our four wonderful daughters, loved everything about Texas A&M and Bonfire. She never missed a cut, and she took personal responsibility for seeing that it was ready on time. She was a very proud member of the FHK (her dorm complex) crew and already had plans to be back in the same dorm next year taking responsibility for recruiting and firing up freshmen to work the 2000 Bonfire. She felt needed and knew that she was a part of something very important. Not only had she found her niche in Bonfire, she was enjoying her classes and instructors, as well. She was doing exactly what parents want their children to do: she was involved in school, working hard in all her classes, and making good grades.

But tragedy can strike at any time. Life doesn't come with guarantees. We find comfort in knowing that she was among some of the finest young people in the world. The friends she had chosen--had worked alongside for weeks--did everything they could to try to save her and the other eleven. They grieve with us. We pray for their recovery and ultimately for their success."

The Jamie Hand Memorial Scholarship Fund has been established at Citizens National Bank in Henderson, TX. The funds will be used each year to help send a graduating Henderson High School senior to Texas A&M University. Jamie was a 1999 Henderson High School honor graduate. Contributions may be sent to Citizens National Bank, P.O. Box 1009, Henderson, TX 75653.
Neva Hand"

November the 18th, 1999, Jamie Hand and eleven others slipped the worldly bonds and left behind grieving families and friends. Though I never personally knew Jamie, or the other fallen Aggies, I feel a great loss and I wanted to do something special for them. I was sent a poem that had been written for Jamie, and the memorial page for her began. Walk here in memory of Jamie......
