MaCauley - "Mac"
Mom's pregnancy with Mac was considered "high risk" even though she had had surgery to correct the deformity in her uterus. She was once again on medications for pre-term labor and Group B strept infections. At 36 1/2 wks, Mac was born during the biggest snowstorm of the winter by C-section, screaming his lungs out, music to all our ears.
He was healthy until his 10 mo. well-baby check-up when it was discovered that his liver was enlarged. He was immediately sent to the local children's hospital and 24-hrs later given the rare diagnosis of Hepatoblastoma - stage 3 (malignant tumor in his liver).
After a central broviac line was placed, Mac recieved four rounds of Cisplatinum/Adriamyacin before his major surgery.
His surgery was a Tri-segmentectomy where 80% of his liver was removed - total right lobe, partial left lobe, gall bladder and nearby lymph nodes.
The post-surgery pathology report showed marginal tumor cells still present and Mac received two more rounds of the former chemo and the seventh treatment was changed to Cisplatinum/5FU/Vincristine.
Mac is presently over four years out from chemo and is doing quite well. He is still monitored by the oncology docs.
Mac's favorite colors are blue & red. He also loves trains and the TV shows Arthur & Magic School Bus. He likes baseball and his favorite player is "Big Mac" - Mark McGwire. Maybe someday we'll get his autograph.
