Please Set Me Free

They cry at night to be set free,
They whimper oh so desperately,
Abandoned standing all alone,
Their only hope, a cry for home.

Their faces tell the story true,
A helpless look just seeping through,
That shows the fear deep down inside,
A fear within they cannot hide.

I wish I could save all their souls,
And fill with food their empty bowls,
It is but then my heart will shake,
The feelings in my soul which quake.

They shiver in the cold of night,
Their hearts reveal their quest for flight,
But still they're trapped behind those bars,
Bearing all their painful scars.

And who is it who holds the key?
The key which holds their liberty,
It is but us, the human race,
Who are to blame for this disgrace.

Please set me free, please take me home,
It is with you I wish to roam,
But is this what the future holds?
It is what they wish will unfold.

For some quickly the journey ends,
And some will find endearing friends,
But there are few who will escape,
The threatened plight, 'tis known as fate.

However when time comes for thee,
There are but two I will set free,
And hold their hearts close unto mine,
'Tis then their lives will be sublime.

And for the others left that stare,
With visions fixed on fearful glare,
There is still hope, a hope which lay,
Within the light of each new day.
