George Field
1942-1946
The Main Gate
One of the many Barracks buildings... our boys' homes away from home; not palatial, but certainly functional!
A common sight to those on the ground in Lawrence and surrounding counties...
The Control tower...
and the Parachute Building
The Service Club contained
a Main lounge (complete
with stage), a Reading Room,
a Writing Room, a Guest Lounge and a Music Room...
Here we have the Post Commissary...
and the Post Exchange, which housed a bowling alley and a Restaurant and Soda Fountain.
GroundSchool Buildings A (left) and B
The Link Trainer Building...
A Production-Line and Maintainence Hangar (above) and a Subdepot Hangar (below)
The Enlisted Men's Mess Hall
Funny, KP never seemed quite so bad as long as there was a copy of the
SNAFU
on hand!
The NCO Club
and the Dayroom...
The Post Theater
The Gymnasium
The Officer's Club featured a Lounge, Bar, Dining Hall and Game Room...
WAC Quarters Civilian Housing
Aerial View of the Hospital Area
As you can see, every effort was made to make our boys as comfortable and cared for as possible... and the citizens of Lawrenceville, IL were more than happy to open their homes and hearts to the servicemen and their families. Many fast friendships were formed during the short 2-3 year period of George Field's operation, and many a young girl lost her heart to an Air School cadet!
Hope you enjoyed this little
"sentimental journey"...
Don't forget, you can
e-mail
me anytime!
I'd like to hear your comments and suggestions, and I'd love contributions of photos, and memoirs to add to the George Field Website! Thanks...
