"You have to let it all go, Neo. Fear, doubt, you must free your mind."
-Morpheus

Chapter 1
Triangulation
by Brax

A brilliant burst of light sent Neo racing out of the construct and into the Matrix. He blinked twice and found himself standing by the beeping rotary telephone. He picked up the receiver and set it in the cradle. He then left the old brick building. Hopefully, this mission would be quick and painless. As he stepped outside, the warm artifical sun caressed his face.

Down the street he moved, blending in with the rest of the human race. They were all still plugged in to the machine, unaware of the reality of their lives. Neo slipped through them all, fluidly, headed towards Joe's Brew Shop. It was an Internet coffee shop. It was the pefect place to set up the first triangulator. Three needed to be set up, but it was too dangerous to do more than one on each visit to the Matrix. According to the roster, Trinity would do the second, and Morpheus the third.

Neo arrived at the coffee shop and pulled the door open. Inside his nostrils were filled with sweet smells. Although he knew all the odors were not real, he still craved a steaming cup of coffee. He ordered a latte, sat down at one of the computers, and opened the program he needed. The last time he had operated a computer was the day before he had taken the red pill. His fingers, however, moved as swiftly over the keyboard as they always had.

Setting up the first transponder would be easy. This sort of thing would allow him to locate certain humans still plugged in to the Matrix. Neo's coffee arrived and he sipped at it. It tasted sweet and hot going down. As he began to manipulate the computer, a small piece of him wished that he had never been awoken. Then, he would still think that the coffee was real.

As he typed he couldn't help but feel that he was being watched. Perhaps the agents were tracking him as he sat here, but he supposed it didn't really matter. He had grown a bit overconfident since his last fight with the agents. It was all too easy now that he could manipulate the code at will. What he didn't know, however, was that the machines were feverishly working on ways to make the programming as skillful as Neo.

Click, click, click...His fingers clattered away at the keys...

When Neo finished his cup of coffee he caught a glimpse of a shadowy figure to his right. He turned his head nonchalantly and saw a man in a dark suit. The man was standing outside the building, perpendicular to the front window. He didn't look like any of the catalogued agents. It was probably nothing. He continued to work, almost finished now.

When he was four keystrokes away from being completed, his ears picked up a faint sound from outside the building, "We have triangulated the signal."

Neo turned his head again and saw a bullet slowly rotating through the window pane and toward his forehead. Immediately, he pushed away from the computer terminal and fell backwards in his chair. Simultaneously, the bullet smashed into the CPU, and Neo pulled a 45 from his black leather jacket. The computer sparked and smoke burst out. Before his chair hit the ground, Neo fired a single round. The agent outside ducked and the bullet slammed into the pavement.

Neo clambered to his feet as the front door burst open. Everyone inside the coffee shop was screaming. The agent, one Neo had never seen before, came in holding dual Desert Eagles. He fired rapidly and Neo jumped to the right, feeling time slow down around him, as he fired back.

The agent rolled to his right, successfully dodging Neo's counterattack. Meanwhile, Neo got to his feet and ran for the exit. The agent fired, the bullet whizzing by his opponent's nose. Now the agent was trying to move around Neo, attempting to shoot him in the back. Neo spun around and leapt backwards, through the other window pane, and fired back at the agent. Five bullets were discharged, and the final one grazed the agent's leg. He dropped for a moment, but wouldn't be put off for long.

Neo's back flared with pain when it hit the hard concrete. Ignoring it, he holstered his weapon and got to his feet. Somehow the agents had found him, and now his project was ruined. He had two choices remaining: run or fight.
