CULVER CITY, Calif., Nov. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Professional wrestling champion Bill Goldberg has joined the cast of the sci-fi action adventure ``Universal Soldier II,'' starring Jean-Claude Van Damme. The film is a follow-up to the 1992 smash ``Universal Soldier,'' which grossed approximately $100 million at the boxoffice worldwide.
``Universal Soldier II'' continues the story of Luc Deveraux (Van Damme), who has survived his experiences as a Universal Soldier, recovered, and is now working as a technical expert on a government project to revive and improve the Universal Soldier training program.
Goldberg will play Romeo, a virtually indestructible Universal Soldier who proves a worthy adversary to Deveraux as the hero attempts to thwart the team of deadly, near-perfect warriors.
Craig Baumgarten, Allen Shapiro and Van Damme produce. Michael I. Rachmil and Daniel Melnick are executive producers. The Baumgarten-Prophet Entertainment/IndieProd Company/Long Road Entertainment production is directed by Mic Rodgers, one of the industry's top second unit directors and former stunt coordinator on films like Twister, Braveheart and all three Lethal Weapon sequels. Rodgers will make his feature film directorial debut from a script by William Malone and John M. Fasano.
Goldberg is one of the most explosive and charismatic stars in World Championship Wrestling, steadily ascending the ranks with his signature move, the punishing ``jackhammer.'' A former University of Georgia all-American defensive lineman, Goldberg also played several seasons with the NFL's Los Angeles Rams and Atlanta Falcons. Goldberg brings the speed and power of his imposing 6'3``, 285 lb. frame to ''Universal Soldier II,`` his feature film debut.
``Universal Soldier II'' will shoot in and around Dallas, Texas through February and will return to Los Angeles for post production. The film is slated for an August 1999 release through Columbia Pictures.
